How to Meet People as a Newcomer in Raleigh: A Comprehensive Guide

Moving to a new city can be both exciting and daunting. Raleigh, North Carolina is known for its vibrant culture, Southern charm, and rapidly growing population, and an excellent place to call home.

However, like any new location, forming friendships in Raleigh requires effort and a proactive approach. This guide provides actionable advice, including tips, places to visit, and groups that can help you establish a social network in your new city.

Our best friends over the years in Raleigh

While most of these tips can apply to meeting new people in any city you move to, we’ve included a few Raleigh specific groups and opportunities to make friends. Firstly…

Raleigh’s Real Friendly, Y’all

We first moved here from Australia in 2004. As nomadic travelers, we understand the importance of forming friendships to thrive in a new environment.

Making new friends was our priority, and we quickly discovered that Raleigh is one of the friendliest places we’ve ever been. In fact, it’s one of the easiest places to make friends. But you do have to be willing to put yourself out there, and sometimes make the first conversation move.

If you’re willing to do that, I’m confident you’ll make new friends quickly. And even if that suggestion terrifies you, many of the suggestions we have in this post will make it easier!

One reason Raleigh is so social is because it’s full of transplants. Transplants, like us, often need to be proactive about forming friendships, and those who have been here for a while are typically open to helping newcomers settle in quickly.

We’ve also found that long-term residents are welcoming. Our closest friends in Raleigh are locals who grew up together here, and they were very open to welcoming us into their circle.

1. Put Yourself Out There

Be Open and Positive

A collection of good friends over the years in Raleigh

As a recovering awkwardly shy introvert, I understand the anxiety that comes with talking to strangers. Through our travels, I’ve learned that most people are genuinely kind, interesting, and interested in you!

The best way to make new friends in any environment is to be open to talking to strangers. Our first friend in Raleigh, Hitesh (still a bestie 20 years later), was the manager of the apartment complex we were looking at. They were full, but he suggested another complex down the road and invited us for a beer if we moved in.

We knocked on his door and have been firm friends ever since. He also introduced us to all of his friends, who we are still friends with today!

If you’re receptive to the inherently kind people in Raleigh, you’ll make new friends quickly. Don’t be shy about asking them to meet up for coffee or a beer – that’s where all good friendships start.

Many in our Facebook community also emphasized the importance of staying positive and avoiding complaints about Raleigh.

There’s a reason you moved here, so embrace the city’s unique charm instead of comparing it to other places. Give yourself time to adjust; once you settle in and start making friends, you’ll love it as much as we do. Perspective is the key to all good experiences.

Chat with Your Neighbors

Neighborhood gathering

When we moved into our new neighborhood, our neighbors knocked on the door with cookies, stopped us on the street to welcome us, and made plans to hang out.

We connected with neighbors who had kids in the same school as ours, which led to closer friendships. Now, we regularly meet up for drinks at breweries and wine bars, around our fire pit at home, the gym, and more! Craig is part of a dad’s club of a nearby neighborhood, and they get together regularly.

As a social person who loves to bring people together, I quickly invited neighbors and school families to gather around our firepit, fostering new friendships. Say yes to all the opportunities or be the one that gathers those who don’t feel comfortable doing it themselves.

They also have fantastic amenities from swimming pools to fitness centers that offer more opportunities to make friends. Don’t be shy to strike up those conversations. Show up to thfeir socializing and networking events.

We recently shot video for the Mira Apartments in Downtown Raleigh and the Keaton Apartments at Brier Creek and were very impressed with their common rooms, outdoor BBQ and games areas, rooftop terrace bars, and social events.

3. Embrace Local Culture and Attend Community Events

Raleigh is rich in cultural experiences, and immersing yourself in local activities is one of the best ways to meet new people. Community events attract locals with shared interests, making them ideal settings for forming friendships.

Attend Festivals and Events

Raleigh hosts numerous events throughout the year, such as the North Carolina State Fair, Brewgaloo Beer Fest, Hopscotch Music Festival, Dreamville Fest, World of Bluegrass, and 50+ festivals & events annually.

With three incredible indoor and outdoor music venues, Raleigh offers many opportunities to meet new people. We recently attended a concert at Red Hat Amphitheater and ended up at a bar afterward with new friends, exchanging phone numbers!

Volunteering at these events is another great way to meet people while contributing to the community.

Visit Museums and Art Galleries

In today’s digital age, online platforms offer numerous ways to connect with others. Raleigh has an active presence on several social networking platforms specifically tailored for meeting new people.

Join Meetup Groups

Meetup is a popular platform where you can find groups based on specific interests, from hiking and photography to tech talks and book clubs. Raleigh has a diverse array of Meetup groups that cater to all kinds of hobbies. Our friend Hitesh constantly makes new friends through Meetup groups, like beer-making and belly dancing.

We’ve hosted meetups ourselves with our community and plan to do more. Subscribe to our email community so you don’t miss these opportunities.

The Unruly Women Collective of Raleigh, the Networking Women of the Triangle, The Women’s Social Club, Thrive Motherhood, and The Raleigh Girls Club are great for socializing. Someone on Facebook recommended Bumble Friends as a great way to meet new people, especially for women.

Use Social Media

Platforms like Facebook and Nextdoor offer groups and communities where you can connect with other local residents.

Look for Raleigh-specific groups or interest-based communities where people frequently organize meetups, share events, and discuss local happenings. I’ve connected with a local women’s group and am already planning a hiking trip with several members.

Join a Book Club

No matter where you live in Raleigh, there will be a book club nearby. I joined our neighborhood book club this year to form new friendships close to home. We meet every six weeks, and I’m forming new neighborhood friendships while expanding my reading list. Here are some book clubs:

Try Game Clubs

Similarly, game clubs might interest you. Our neighborhood has a monthly Bunco club – a fun, low-skill game that’s great for bonding. You might also enjoy a visit to a local board game café like Meeple’s Brew in Morrisville and Cary or The Kitchen Table in North Raleigh.

Join a Sports League or Group

Raleigh offers various recreational sports leagues through organizations like Tri Sports, Raleigh Parks, Triangle Adult Soccer League, the YMCA, and Goombay RDU. Whether you’re interested in soccer, basketball, or kickball, joining a team is a fun and effective way to build friendships through shared goals.

One of our oldest friends in Raleigh was someone we met at a social networking event hosted by Tri Sports. We weren’t part of the group; we just wanted to go to the Beerfest in Durham with their tour group. We met newcomer Bert at the pre-drinks before the bus left and spent the night with him. We’ve had many fun nights since!

Pickleball is trending all over the country, and you’ll find several groups over Wake County you can play with and hence make new friends.

Similarly joining a Bowling, Billiards, or Golf League can lead to new friendships. Even a fantasy football league will do that!

Hiking and Biking

With 100+ miles of greenway trails, the Raleigh area is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. The Neuse River Trail and William B. Umstead State Park are popular spots where you can join hiking or biking groups. Participating in regular outdoor activities fosters camaraderie and opens the door to lasting friendships.

Crank Arm Brewery is one of the most popular bike riding clubs in the city. They regularly meet for bike rides throughout the city followed by a refreshing ale after. They even have a race team.

Oak City Cycling is a local independent bike shop that hosts outreach and community events. Also check on Strava and Meetup.com for cycling groups. Other cycling clubs include:

Join a Run Club

While marathons aren’t my thing, many people love run clubs, not just for the miles but for the social aspect. Bonding over 5Ks is strong—often involving a post-run beer or two. Some clubs even combine running with drinking beer. It feels like almost any brewery in Wake County has a run club. Some run clubs we’ve heard great things about are:

These spots are great for striking up a conversation with fellow patrons or even the baristas, who can often introduce you to other regulars.

Attend Trivia Nights and Social Gatherings

Many bars and restaurants in Raleigh, such as Raleigh Times Bar, Boxcar Bar + Arcade, and Crank Arm Brewery, host weekly trivia nights, game nights, and other social events. These events are designed to bring people together in a fun, competitive environment, making it easier to meet new friends.

Hang out with alumni or fellow sporting lovers at bars

If fitness is a priority, Raleigh’s numerous gyms, fitness studios, and wellness centers provide an excellent platform for meeting people who share similar health goals.

Join a Gym or Fitness Class

Facilities like O2 Fitness and YMCA of the Triangle offer a variety of classes, from yoga to CrossFit. We were part of the F45 fitness community, which we loved and found to be extremely welcoming to newcomers.

Local yoga studios are usually a great place to meet friends. We love the Dose Yoga experience in North Hills or Smoky Hollows. A rock-climbing membership may also lead to great friendships with like-minded people. Triangle Rock Club has multiple locations across the Triangle.

North Hills has weekly group fitness classes during the Spring and Fall in Midtown Common and Downtown Cary Park has free group yoga of a Saturday morning.

Group fitness classes often foster a sense of community as participants encourage each other to push through challenging workouts, creating bonds in the process.

In 2017, we participated in the 1K flip-flop run at Bond Brothers Brewery in Cary, an event that landed us in the Guinness Book of Records for most people running 1K in flip-flops. There’s a zany group or experience to suit all interests in Raleigh.

One of our favorite quirky annual events is the Kirby Derby at Dix Park. Bring your own go-kart and race down the hill against other daredevils dressed in themed costumes. Not that adventurous? Hang back and watch with the crowds, making new friends along the way.

11. Connect Through Faith-Based Communities

For those who are religious or spiritually inclined, Raleigh has a wide range of churches, synagogues, mosques, and other places of worship where you can connect with like-minded individuals.
