How Do You Pronounce Mordecai?

Wondering how to pronounce Mordecai — one of Raleigh’s most historic neighborhoods? You’ll likely hear it said two different ways: Mor-de-kai or Mor-de-key.

According to a tour we took at Mordecai Historic Park (the neighborhood’s namesake), the correct pronunciation is “Mor-de-key.” The original Mordecai family adopted this pronunciation in the 1800s to better assimilate into Raleigh society during a time when antisemitism was widespread.

It’s a small but meaningful detail that ties into the deeper history of both the family and the city — and one that locals still love to discuss today.

Where Is Mordecai?

Mordecai sits just 1.4 miles north of downtown Raleigh, bordered by several well-known districts and streets that make it easy to get oriented:

• Wake Forest Road divides the neighborhood into two sides — the classic Mordecai conversation starter is, “Which side of Wake Forest Rd do you live on?”
• Brookside Drive marks the eastern edge — and just beyond it, you’ll find Optimist Coffee, a local favorite for your morning latte.
• Glascock Street is a well-known street seeing some home restorations. It runs past the small Brookside retail / dining area.
• North Person Street runs through Mordecai and in some parts Historic Oakwood. It’s the street where the two communities gather and become one!
• Blount Street frames other edges of the neighborhood, connecting you seamlessly to Oakwood, Seaboard Station, and Downtown.

Mordecai is one of Raleigh’s most walkable neighborhoods. From most streets, you can easily get to:

• North Person Street District in 5 -10 minutes — filled with local dining, boutiques, and bars.

Mordecai Neighborhood Schools & Education

Families appreciate Mordecai’s access to excellent schools and educational opportunities within the Wake County Public School System. The base schools currently zoned to Mordecai include:

• Raleigh Nursery School has been a leader in childcare since 1949. They offer a small learning environment with a focus on outdoor education to help prepare children for kindergarten.
• Conn Elementary – A Magnet School of Entrepreneurial Design located within the Mordecai neighborhood. Conn has recently been named a National Magnet Schools of America “School of Excellence” and “School of Distinction.”
• Oberlin Middle School – not in Mordecai itself, but the base middle school for the Mordecai neighborhood. Oberlin Middle is a Global Studies and Language Immersion Magnet Middle School 
• Broughton High – again, not located in Mordecai, but the neighborhood’s base high school. This school is a Raleigh institution is a Global Studies & Language Immersion magnet high school and an International Baccalaureate World School. It’s Wake County’s most historic school.

Private and charter options nearby include Raleigh Charter School, The Exploris School, and Envision Science Academy. And just steps away, William Peace University brings student life and creativity to the neighborhood — adding vibrancy, green space, and that distinct “college-town” charm. And nearby on the eastern edge of Historic Oakwood is Saint Augustine’s University, a private HBCU.

Getting Around

Whether on foot, bike, or bus, Mordecai keeps you connected. GoRaleigh bus routes run regularly nearby, and for drivers, Capital Boulevard, Wade Avenue, I-440, and I-540 are all easily accessible — making getting around Wake County and weekend getaways a breeze. Mordecai & Historic Oakwood

Stanbury

Sometimes it’s hard to find the line between Mordecai and Oakwood. Since they’re both small side-by-side historic neighborhoods with few places to eat, drink, play, I’m combining them under this section.

• Stanbury – Located in Mordecai Village, this is one of our favorite restaurants in all of Raleigh (that many people still don’t know about). Renowned for its quirky ambiance (think coastal shack married neighborhood romance) and its daily changing seasonal menu. No reservations taken, get here early!
• The Optimist – A neighborhood go-to coffee spot on the edge of Brookside Drive, Mordecai. Beautiful light, great vibes, small bites, and seriously good coffee.
• Pine State Coffee: Right on the edge of Mordecai is a cozy and community-oriented cafe with a retail store. It also serves as a hub for running and biking enthusiasts! Owner Larz Robinson roasts his beans in-house to ensure a high-quality product and his flat whites are excellent!
• SmokeStacks Cafe: Another hidden gem (and in-the-know locals’ favorite) housed in a former bungalow with cute patio dining and an elevated menu that changes daily based on seasonal produce. Hopefully you’ll get to try some of their crispy pig ears!
• Side Street Restaurant: Soups, salads & sandwiches, plus sweet treats, served in a quaint space with an old-fashioned feel.

North Person Street Favorites

• Jolie – One of our favorite fine dining and date-night spots. A rooftop French bistro by chef Scott Crawford that’s as cozy as it is delicious.
• Crawford and Son – Elevated comfort food that always hits the mark (don’t skip the sticky toffee pudding). Another of Scott Crawford’s Restaurants. We love the champagne window they have here! Grab an Aperol Spritz (done right) and some truffle frites and sit on the sidewalk for people watching.
• William & Company – A favorite neighborhood gathering spot with excellent craft cocktails. Plus, we love their surprise up the back by the curtain, which is…
• La Veladora – Located at the back of William & Company. My favorite cocktail bar in Raleigh for its unique Mexican vibes and incredible mezcal crafted cocktails (the best I’ve had).
• Krispy Kreme – Home to this iconic doughnut chain’s second ever location in the world.
• Person Street Bar – Relaxed vibes, creative cocktails, and friendly faces.

Unlikely Professionals

• Yellow Dog Bakery – Ah, the smells of this freshly baked bread and delicious pastries – makes me curse my gluten free body (gently) They also have fairly decent coffee.
• Two Roosters Ice Cream – A neighborhood worth living in is one where you can walk to ice cream, right? Just a few steps and you’ll be at one of Raleigh’s most favorite local ice cream stores.
• Standard Beer + Food – Yep. You can even walk to your own neighborhood brewery from Mordecai. Standard has a lovely outdoor seating area overlooking Raleigh City Farm and their slightly elevated food is delicious.

• Wine Authorities – Rather walk to a wine bar from your Mordecai home? You’ve got it. North Person St has their own wine store complete with cozy drinking area and free wine tasting events.
• Pelagic Beer & Wine: Another cozy neighborhood bottle shop selling independent craft beer, wine and cider with a lovely outdoor seating area under the canopy of the tree lined street.
• Edge of Urge – A local boutique packed with unique gifts and Raleigh-made treasures.
• Unlikely Professionals – A boutique clothes shop and gift store for men – filled with leather smells and rugged quirks, including a saloon bar.

Seaboard Station

• Boatman Spirits Co – A fantastic new restaurant in Raleigh that will take you on a journey to the Underworld where Mediterranean flavors reign supreme and craft cocktails heighten your spirits. Also coming soon is their very exciting distillery!!
• Biscuit Belly: Serving up a hearth Southern breakfast, brunch or lunch with their signature biscuits – many ways you like them – as well as sandwiches, coffee, and breakfast cocktails
• Omakase by Kai offers a selection of luxurious Japanese dishes and contemporary plates made using the best seasonal ingredients
• High Rail Rooftop Bar: Located in the new Hyatt hotel this Raleigh rooftop bar is the spot for small bites, cocktails, and gorgeous sunset views.

Boatman Spirits Co.

• Palm Berries: Your Go To Spot for colorful acai and pitaya bowls served in a space that feels like a tropical vacation!
• The Yard Milkshake Bar: A favorite for kids of all ages, expect towering milkshakes filled with cakes, cookies, toppings to create an Instagrammable feast!
• New additions are transforming the area into one of the city’s most vibrant destinations, with restaurants, and retail coming soon.

Parks & Outdoor Fun

• Mordecai Historic Park: Walk the grounds or tour the 1785 Historic Mordecai House for a glimpse of Raleigh’s early days. The birth home of former President Andrew Johnson is here.
• Raleigh City Farm: a true Raleigh treasure, this nonprofit urban farm on a one-acre corner lot has a weekly Pay-What-You-Want farm stand and volunteer opportunities. Produce grown on the farm is shared with local nonprofits that address food insecurity and access.
• Halifax Park: A neighborhood favorite for playground time, basketball courts, and community center. Located just behind William Peace University and Seaboard Station.
• Fred Fletcher Park: Just a short 5-minute drive around is one of our favorite green spaces in the city for picnics and gatherings. They have a lot of community events (live music, movies, markets) and have sport fields & courts, a water garden, walking paths & a playground.

• Lion’s Park: Large community park offering a fitness center, BMX trail, sport courts, athletic fields & more.
• Crabtree Creek Greenway Trail: a 4 min drive or a 10 min bike ride takes you to the popular Crabtree Creek greenway trail.
• Oakwood Dog Park: Off-leash dog area with fenced sections for big & small breeds in a 12.7-acre park.
• Moore Square & Nash Square – Downtown green spaces hosting markets, music, and community events.
• Dorthea Dix Park Raleigh’s amazing urban park is only a 10 minute drive away with views of the city, picnic spots, dog parks, a fantastic new kid’s playground and wonderful community events.
• Pullen Park another iconic and historic Raleigh park only a 10 minute drive away with a small playground and pond kids love!

Events & Attractions

• Seaboard Station has monthly markets with local vendors and live music.
• William Peace University has its own theatre program with performances you can attend at the Leggett Theatre
• Candlelight Concerts are often held in some of the historic venues in the Oakwood area namely Merrimon-Wynne House and the All Saints Chapel.
• Historic Oakwood hosts the annual Candlelight Tour during the Christmas Holidays and a Garden Club tour during the Spring. You get to visit different historic homes in the neighborhood and enjoy their decorations and gardens.
• The annual 5K Krispy Kreme Challenge is an iconic Raleigh fun run event. Run from NC State’s Belltower to Krispy Kreme, eat 12 doughnuts, and then run back! All for a good fundraising cause. You can walk or skip the donuts.
• Plus, you’re within easy access to the plethora of events and attractions in Downtown Raleigh.
