About Five Points Raleigh
Five Points is so named because it’s where five historic neighborhoods in Raleigh converge at the five-point street intersection of Glenwood Avenue, Whitaker Mill Road, and Fairview Road.
The area offers a mix of classic architecture, walkability, and a location that’s hard to beat – just minutes from downtown Raleigh and easy access to major shopping, entertainment and Raleigh’s I-440 beltline. The five neighborhoods that make up the area include:
- Hayes Barton
- Bloomsbury
- Georgetown
- Vanguard Park
- and Roanoke Park.
All of the neighborhoods were platted in the 1910s through early 1920s and each neighborhood has a distinct character created by its location, deed restrictions, and period of development. The overall area is characterized by bungalows, Colonial Revival style homes, one to two-story single-family homes, estate homes, patio homes and townhomes.
Rich in diversity, locals are drawn to the area because of the convenient and easy access to downtown, pedestrian-friendly side-walked streets, pleasant ambiance, parks, and its combination of old and new. There’s also the small town feel with the epicenter of shops, restaurants, cafes, bars, pharmacies, and convenience stores.

Located just 2-miles north of downtown Raleigh, you’re within an easy drive of all that the city of Raleigh has to offer, yet far enough away from the hustle and bustle of city life. You’re only a 7-minute drive to drive two of Raleigh’s other popular districts, North Hills and the Village District, and you have easy access to Raleigh’s major thoroughfares of Wade Ave, I-440 (beltline) and I-40.

Cozy coffee shop in Five Points
Established in 1994, the Third Place Coffee Shop offers a cozy and eclectic vibe with local art and crafts and antiques on display and for sale. Coffee is brewed fresh daily using Larry’s Coffee, a local producer, and they have a range of sandwiches, pastries, and baked goods on the menu. Get cozy in one of their couches, or there’s ample tables and chairs to choose from.
Idle Hour Coffee Roasters

My favorite place for coffee in the area is Idle Hour Coffee Roasters, a boutique coffee shop in the nearby Oberlin neighborhood, just over ½ a mile from downtown Five Points. I love the neighborhood feel of this coffee shop, and it’s the perfect spot to catch up with friends or to get some work done online. There are comfy couches, booths, a desk bar with bar next to the huge windows, and outdoor seating.
Great coffee + desserts
Idle Hour is a coffee house first and foremost, but they also serve tea, baked goods, plus paninis, sandwiches and other small bites. And good luck getting out of here without eating one of their delicious pastries or desserts!

One of our favorite brunch spots in Raleigh is the unique and iconic NoFo @ the Pig which is located inside a former Piggly Wiggly store, offering a blend of Southern comfort food and a quirky shopping experience. NOFO is Loved for its Southern inspired meals and its one-of-a-kind setting. My favorites include their warmed pimento cheese dip with crispy bacon, shrimp and grits, fried okra, sweet potato fries, and BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich.
Excellent food + drinks
Open for lunch Tuesday-Friday, brunch Saturday and Sunday, and dinner Wednesday-Saturday. Don’t miss their brunch drink specials (I love the Espresso Martini), and creative cocktails (try the Strawberry Habanero Margarita).
Mac’s Speed Shop

Mac’s was one of our favorite food finds of 2024. A trendy sports bar and barbecue spot yet with a casual atmosphere offering smoked meats, craft beer, and a lively vibe perfect for watching sports or catching live music.
Fantastic BBQ + smoked wings
We loved its excellent BBQ offerings – try the Hickory smoked sampler platter! The other standout was the pulled chicken nachos, and I am confident in claiming their smoked chicken wings as the best I’ve ever had. Great lunch and drink specials.
Bloomsbury Bistro

Bloomsbury Bistro is a cozy, unassuming hub for high-end, French-influenced dining in Raleigh with an eclectic menu that changes seasonally. They’ve been located in historic Five Points since 1995. Lilly’s Pizza

Lilly’s offers some of the best pizza in Raleigh and has been a staple pizza place for more than 30 years and has won several awards for their Carolina crust. What’s special about the crust is they use 100% Certified Organic and Kosher stone-milled, whole-wheat flour, and top their pizzas with the freshest, organic ingredients.

We particularly like their Hawaiian Punch pizza, which is topped with mandarin orange segments, pineapple, and Canadian bacon. And if you’re meat-free, then you’ll like Lilly’s which has a huge range of vegan and vegetarian pizza options.
Hayes Barton Cafe & Dessertery

A classic Raleigh staple and still locally owned, this cafe is a real throwback to a classic 50’s diner with a fun, friendly ambiance and quaint neighborhood feel, including photos of old celebrities and world war II soldiers and sailors. Loyal fans flock here for their HUGE and delicious cakes – the coconut cake is a favorite. Each slice is a mountain of decadence and big enough to share with 2 – 4 people. Also serving lunch and dinner on select days.

Donut lovers can head to Bright Spot, a cute little donut shop off the beaten path in the neighborhood. Their donuts are made with 100% organic flour milled at Boulted Bread, and, they serve Jubala Coffee, one of our favorite coffee shops in Raleigh.

If I was living in Five Points, Crafty would be my go-to local place to meet friends, watch a game, or just hang-out and get some work done online. They carry top national and international craft beer, with a focus on North Carolina beer. 16 beers on tap and they sell all of their beer by the bottle so you can even take some home!
Cool bar & bottle shop
Plus, an awesome wine list, either by the glass, or select from their retail wine selection. And, higher end spirits and cocktails! A laid-back, dog-friendly pub-like atmosphere with a patio. Perfect for all occasions.
Neuse River Brewing & Brasserie

For a brewery, the food offerings at Neuse River are quite upscale, but the overall vibe is informal and relaxed. This is a family-friendly brewery and brasserie, a European Bistro inspired fare with a North Carolina twist. It’s popular for its diverse menu, including standout dishes like shrimp and grits, wild mushroom polenta, their burger, and the perfectly prepared Bistro plate with chicken cutlet.
Wild mushroom polenta \ Hazy IPA
A top spot for brunch or a casual outing with friends. This brewery focuses on Belgian ales and IPA (their Saturday Morning Hazy IPA is a favorite) and has a lovely and large informal outside seating area. The patio is dog friendly.
Nickelpoint Brewing Company
Nicklepoint was founded by two home-brewing brothers with a reverence for historical styles. They have a small taproom, but a large biergarten space for watching sports on a huge projector screen. Their shaded patio is a relaxing spot to sample one of their 14 beers on tap (they have wine too). Or play a game of foosball, giant jenga, and cornhole. We even have sidewalk chalk and a play table for the kiddos!
Live music events on Fridays and Sundays, and a monthly comedy show. And they have a red double decker bus onsite which is cool.
Some of the above-mentioned restaurants have great bars if you just want to have a drink, such as Lola’s Beach Bar and Mac’s Speed Shop. There’s also Uncle Jessie’s HonkyTonk which brings a slice of Nashville with live music!

Nearby parks, gardens and recreational areas for outdoor activities close to the Five Points area include:
- Fred Fletcher Park – Tranquil park offering sport fields & courts, a water garden, walking paths & a playground.
- Roanoke Park – Community park with a concrete basketball court, grass volleyball court & kids’ playground.
- Jaycee Park – City park providing a playground, community center, athletic fields & the Daylily Garden.
- Fallon Park – Quiet and serene park, loads of places to sit and the old mill ruins are a nice touch. Great for walking the dogs and taking in nature.
Arts & Entertainment
Rialto Theatre
The historic Rialto Theatre opened in 1936, and this performance art theatre is one of Raleigh’s few remaining independent movie theaters. Through the 80s and ’90s, the 432-seat Rialto served as a frequent concert venue. Over the years, it hosted notable acts including Melissa Etheridge, Jane’s Addiction, Iggy Pop, and Ben Folds.
Its programming shifted to mostly movies later in the 1990s and stayed that way up until August 2022, when longtime owner Bill Peebles retired. The Rialto shut down for almost a year until Raleigh native, Hayes Permar, bought it. The Rialto’s been so many things in its history. Many local musicians and fans have a favorite memory set there, and many have seen the Rocky Horror Picture Show.

- NOFO @ The Pig Cafe features 300+ unique food products made in NC and the South. The gift store offers an array of unusual and unexpected wares to showcase local products from NC artists in addition to globally-known lifestyle brands.
- Gallery 5 (aka For Your Convenience). Interesting local art gallery and gift shop that also carries unique jewelry and clothes plus great home gift items. Location: 1700 Glenwood Ave #100
- Gretchen Quinn Pottery makes functional ceramics that are a reflection of their love for simple luxuries. By combining hand carved patterns to clean, modern shapes, they craft wares that are a pleasure to both use and admire.
- Hayes Barton Pharmacy offers a personalized approach to pharmacy care, at a comparable price to other pharmacies, in a convenient location in our community.
- Petal and Fern at 5 Points is a boutique flower shop that specializes in contemporary European designs.
From Five points, you are only a 7-minute drive to Raleigh’s premier shopping district, North Hills, and a 7-minute drive to another of Raleigh’s prominent shopping centers, Crabtree Valley Mall. And, only a 5-minute drive to the historic Village District Shopping Center.
