Upscale Hotels near Raleigh: The Best Luxury Stays in the Triangle

Raleigh has always had an innovative spirit, after all, it was a planned city to be the capital of North Carolina, and nothing within it was done by accident. Raleigh isn’t as brash or boastful, nor is it as buttoned-up as other NC cities, but it’s subtly evolving behind the scenes and offering high-end stays that acknowledge that.

Over the past decade, since we first moved to Raleigh, I’ve watched the skyline subtly rise, and its hotel scene sharpen into something genuinely impressive. We don’t have many 5-star hotels (in fact, we only have one), but there are several upscale hotels near Raleigh in the Triangle area (Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill) that appeal to more than just business travelers alike.

What I love most about Raleigh’s high-end stays is how distinctly local they feel. You’ll find many upscale hotels in Raleigh have rooftop bars with views of oak tree canopies at sunset, lobbies perfumed with North Carolina pine, and restaurants that have farm-to-table menus with our staple sweet potatoes and Carolina shrimp stealing the show. Luxury in Raleigh isn’t about gilded gold furniture or caviar as you enter, it’s about thoughtful design, warm Southern service, and leaving every visitor feeling like they are welcomed in our beloved City of Oaks.

If you’re looking for a hotel near Raleigh that’s a bit more polished than your typical chain hotel or motel, then there’s never been a better time to check-in to the following upscale hotels for a memorable stay!

The Umstead Hotel & Spa

DJI 0887

Of course, we must begin our list with Raleigh’s only five-star hotel, The Umstead Hotel & Spa, which is set on 12 acres of serene woodland overlooking a private lake just outside downtown. It’s the most refined upscale escape in the Triangle that we’ve personally stayed in, and we can easily see why it has earned the only Forbes Five‑Star and AAA Five Diamond–rated hotel in North Carolina.

Everything about The Umstead Hotel exudes luxury, but it’s not pretentious with it. It’s the artful touches, the thoughtful spaces designed for peace and relaxation, and the staff who genuinely seem pleased to see you. From the moment you arrive to the moment you leave; the sense of calm is unmistakable.

We spent a night at The Umstead Hotel and were blown away by how whisper‑quiet it was, despite being close to the interstate. The lodge is set among Carolina pines, and we loved walking along the small 0.3-mile walk around its lake and butterfly garden.

The building itself is accented by modern art, the striking Dale Chihuly glass sculpture in the lobby is hard to miss, and there is a curated art collection dotted around the property, as well as temporary exhibitions in its dedicated gallery. The rooms, well, they are like tranquil sanctuaries. Our guest room was spacious and had garden views, a luxurious marble bathroom with a deep soaking tub, plush bedding, and bespoke furnishings. I also liked thoughtful perks like the Nespresso machines, and waking up to my own private balcony was a dream come true.

Even if you don’t stay here, you must visit for a meal at Herons, one of only a handful of Forbes Five‑Star restaurants worldwide. Here, celebrated chefs craft exquisite dishes highlighting seasonal, locally sourced ingredients, often from the hotel’s own One Oak Farm, paired with outstanding wines. The sommelier was all too pleased to share his knowledge of Australian wines with us and having grown up in Australia and visited its many wine regions, we can assure you his knowledge was on point.

Lastly, the full‑service spa is not to be missed for any luxury-seeking traveler. We visited on a day pass once and enjoyed the massages and outdoor co-ed whirlpool. They also do facials, body treatments, and have steam rooms, saunas, lounges, meditation gardens, and more. See prices and availability here. The Carolina Inn, Chapel Hill

Lastly, a hotel we stayed at most recently is the four-star Destination by Hyatt Hotel, The Carolina Inn in Chapel Hill. This elegant and opulent homedates back to 1924 and sits on the University of North Carolina campus, just a short stroll from downtown Chapel Hill. Each of the rooms in this historic hotel features modern amenities, though it still has characterful nods to its early days, with 4-poster beds and vintage photos of the university on the wall. It also has suites with separate sitting areas, so you can feel like staying at home away from home.

Luxury amenities include in-room spa treatments, a complimentary local shuttle service, an exercise room, and its sophisticated afternoon tea service, which we recently experienced with Craigs parents for the holidays. Come the evening, head to the bar or onsite restaurant, Crossroads, which serves high-end Southern American cuisine, and craft cocktails.

Their buffet breakfast is also one of the best we have experienced. We also love their legendary Fridays on the Porch community gathering event during the Fall and Spring. See prices and availability here. Read more: What It’s Like to Stay at The Carolina Inn – Chapel Hill’s Iconic Hotel

The Fearrington House Inn — Pittsboro’s Countryside Escape

Fearrington House

Just a scenic 45-minute drive south of Raleigh, The Fearrington House Inn offers a different kind of luxury — one rooted in Southern charm, pastoral landscapes, and thoughtful touches at every turn. This Relais & Châteaux property sits in the heart of Fearrington Village, an idyllic slice of countryside where gardens, oak trees, and redbrick paths set the tone for a truly peaceful stay. It comes with black and white belted cattle and black and white Columbian Wyandotte chickens roaming the property’s fields.

The inn itself blends classic farmhouse architecture with refined interiors — think individually designed rooms, fresh flowers from the gardens, and cozy fireplaces that make each guest room feel like a private sanctuary. Many visitors are drawn to the tranquil, romantic vibe here, whether it’s a weekend away with a loved one or a restorative midweek break.

One standout feature is The Spa at Fearrington, a boutique wellness destination offering massages, facials, and body treatments using premium skincare lines — perfect for unwinding after exploring the village or nearby Jordan Lake.

Dining at Fearrington is another major highlight. The onsite Fearrington House Restaurant serves seasonal, chef-driven cuisine in a refined yet approachable setting, with garden views and an acclaimed wine list that make every meal feel like an occasion. Don’t skip the chocolate souffle!! We also took my parents visiting from Australia here for their delicious afternoon tea. It’s my favorite afternoon tea in the Triangle.

If you’re craving something a bit more pastoral and curated than a traditional city hotel — one where nature, food, and nurture are just part of the stay — Fearrington House Inn is a Triangle treasure worth the short drive. The Mayton, Cary

In the heart of downtown Cary, The Mayton is a boutique hotel that feels more like a thoughtfully curated home than a generic chain property. With just over 40 uniquely designed rooms and suites, no two spaces are the same; each room is infused with distinctive Art Deco character and décor that gives the hotel a personality that you won’t often find in traditional hotels. All rooms feature plush triple‑sheeted beds, flat‑screen HDTVs, writing desks, and individualized climate control. Some suites have kitchenettes and generous living spaces.

The hotel also offers a full or cooked‑to‑order breakfast, while in the evenings, the on-site restaurant, Peck and Plume, offers New American classics with a Southern twist. We love the food in this restaurant and usually take our family visiting from Australia and guests from out of town. Their shrimp and grits are the best I’ve had in the Triangle. It also has a lovely terrace, a quiet garden, a 24‑hour fitness center, and is within walking distance of downtown Cary, where you will find local breweries, parks, and boutique shops.  See prices and availability here.

Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club, Durham

washington duke inn

We’ve not yet stayed at the Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club, which sits on the edge of Duke University campus, but we have visited to enjoy their decadent afternoon tea. We are very excited to be staying their next month for the first time, not just for a luxury hotel staycation experience but to also play on their iconic 18-hole Championship golf course. (Golf lessons will be had before it!)

This hotel is what I would say combines classic Southern hospitality with refined resort‑style amenities. It looks like a stately country home, set in a 300-acre landscape of towering pines and rolling fairways, but on the inside, it’s elegant and comfortable without feeling dated. It has 271 well‑appointed guest rooms and suites that give off an old English country house vibe; many of those rooms look out over the Duke University Golf Course on the grounds.

The golf course is a centerpiece of the experience here, an 18‑hole Robert Trent Jones championship course that welcomes golfers of all skill levels, and you can also book lessons with a professional through the Duke University Golf Club. The Fairview Dining Room is an acclaimed AAA Four Diamond restaurant and offers refined Southern cuisine, while you can find a more casual setting and craft cocktails at the cozy Bull Durham Bar. It also has a heated indoor pool, a well‑equipped fitness center, and is close to the scenic trails through Duke Forest. See prices and availability here.

The StateView Hotel

Another luxury hotel we’ve personally enjoyed staying at is The StateView Hotel, which is perched on the scenic shores of Lake Raleigh on North Carolina State University’s Centennial Campus. It’s one of Raleigh’s most striking boutique luxury hotels and offers stylish and upscale vibes without feeling stuffy.

The draw to The StateView for us isn’t the hotel itself but the grounds. With sweeping water views, framed by oaks, it’s the true definition of an oasis in the heart of a city. The hotel has plentiful natural light throughout and crisp modern décor. Rooms come with plush furnishings, high‑speed Wi‑Fi, smart TVs, and plenty of space. Many rooms, such as the room we stayed in, offer vistas of Lake Raleigh.

We enjoyed our breakfast at the hotel’s signature restaurant, Flask & Beaker, during our stay, and went back to sample the farm‑to‑table menu another evening. We sat on the terrace overlooking the pool, but there’s also a lovely indoor space with a view of the open-concept kitchen. If you want natural elegance and convenience, this is it. Renaissance Raleigh North Hills

north hills shopping 10

Our favorite upscale hotel in the vibrant North Hills district is the Renaissance Raleigh North Hills, which, for us, strikes the perfect balance between chic, sophistication, and approachable warmth. Its modern, art‑inspired design feels contemporary without feeling in-your-face, which is in keeping with the creative spirit of Midtown Raleigh. Guest rooms and suites are spacious and homey, with dark wood furnishings and plush, premium bedding. They have all the mod-cons that you’d expect, such as air‑conditioning, Smart TVs, workspaces, and topped off with luxurious touches like whirlpool tubs in some rooms.

Dining at the lively 41Hundred Restaurant & Lounge is a relaxed yet elevated dining experience. The menu offers creative American cuisine, craft cocktails, and house‑aged whiskeys, and the bar has a social vibe.

Its strongest asset is its location. It’s a luxury stay that doesn’t feel isolated from the city and is just minutes away from North Hill’s vibrant and stylish community. You can walk to some of our favorite restaurants in Raleigh. Don’t just take our word for it that this is a top upscale hotel in Raleigh, many visiting high profile professional athletes and touring artists stay here. See prices and availability here. Hyatt House Downtown / Seaboard Station

High Rail rooftop bar

A newer addition to Raleigh’s downtown hotel scene, the Hyatt House sits in the Seaboard Station district and has a refreshing take on upscale, extended‑stay lodging. This seven‑story hotel offers residential comfort with all the comforts of home, with smart amenities that only a hotel can offer — seasonal outdoor pool, 24‑hour fitness center, business services, flexible meeting space, and convenient amenities like a 24‑hour market and pet‑friendly policy.

The hotel’s rooms and suites are designed for an elevated and long-term stay. Many offer full kitchens with stainless‑steel appliances and dishwashers, comfortable living areas, sleeper sofas, workspaces, and more. We have not personally stayed at this hotel, but we have toured the rooms and love their spaciousness, and we love the rooftop bar.

While each morning you can enjoy a complimentary hot breakfast buffet, complete with build‑your‑own omelets. It also has an on-site cafe, Latitude, and a sophisticated rooftop bar, High Rail, which offers sweeping skyline vistas, stunning sunsets, and craft cocktails. Hyatt House fuses comfortable, apartment‑style living with luxury touches, which makes it ideal for longer visits to the city. See prices and availability here.
