What It’s Like to Stay at The Carolina Inn – Chapel Hill’s Iconic Hotel

It didn’t take long for us to understand why The Carolina Inn in Chapel Hill is affectionately known as “the University’s living room.” And in case you don’t know, that is the University of North Carolina (UNC) – the first public university in the United States.

For over 100 years, this iconic hotel has been welcoming UNC students, alumni, faculty visitors, and visiting families with open arms — and after staying here ourselves, we get it. It’s more than just a place to sleep; it’s a piece of Chapel Hill’s soul.

This luxurious boutique style hotel is part of the Destination by Hyatt brand, which encompasses a diverse collection of independent hotels and resorts that are individual at heart and embody the true spirit of each location. It’s four-star luxury, and an AAA Four Diamond Award winner, with over a century of experience delivering distinguished service. Amongst its former guests are President Obama, James Taylor, and Yo-Yo Ma.

From the moment we walked into the stately brick building, surrounded by beautifully manicured English-style gardens, we felt like we were stepping into a Southern storybook — where elegance meets comfort, and tradition blends effortlessly with luxury. Below is our personal review of our stay at The Carolina Inn, Chapel Hill.

A legacy of history and heart

Built in 1924 and located right on the UNC campus, The Carolina Inn has a rich legacy steeped in Tar Heel pride. It’s part of the Historic Hotels of America and has the grace and grandeur to prove it. The Carolina Inn was actually a pioneer of what we now call the Southern Colonial style — a charming blend of Georgian, Neoclassical, and European influences.

The original façade was modeled after George Washington’s Mount Vernon (facing the Potomac), and the whole place gives off those grand mansion vibes — without feeling stuffy. The interiors showcase a sophisticated Southern aesthetic with cozy nooks, curated antiques, and tasteful Carolina Blue accents throughout.

The Carolina Inn was built by UNC trustee John Sprunt Hill, who generously donated it to the university in 1935 with a heartfelt wish: that its profits support the University library — especially the treasured North Carolina Collection. Nearly a century later, his legacy still lives on, with that mission continuing to be honored today.

Spend time wandering the halls perusing old photographs and reading the history of this iconic Chapel Hill hotel. I loved the glimpse into the past and seeing how life does change too much beyond the monochrome photos – even the Model T’s struggled to find parking spots near the Old Well. The historic preservation of this scenic hotel is astonishing.

Whether you’re lounging in the charming front parlor, admiring the artwork, or walking the hallways filled with UNC memorabilia, you can feel the sense of pride and place that lives in every corner.

What we loved about our stay at The Carolina Inn

Sophistication with Southern Charm

Our room was the perfect mix of luxury and warmth. Think plush bedding, elegant furniture, and subtle Carolina Blue touches that made the whole space feel peaceful and connected to the local spirit – including the blue doorway, which I loved. We stayed in a standard two queen room with a small desk, coffee bar, TV, and bathroom. The hotel also has larger suites, bedroom suites, and accessible rooms.

Modern and comfortable

The room was modern and comfortable with a fantastic full force shower, and Nespresso coffee. I’ve never really been into Nespresso but after experiencing it here, and the Umstead Hotel recently, I am a fan. It’s a luxe step up from normal hotels’ sub-standard coffee and is worth mentioning from now on in our 4-star hotel reviews!

Bottles of water were left in the room each day – although with our effort to be more sustainable using reusable bottles, I’d like to see the hotel move towards nudging guests towards the filtered water in the hotel. On check in we had delicious square raspberry chocolates on our bedside table – we would have loved more of them the next morning, daytime and nighttime.

Truly dear readers, we are being very picky here, only in the effort to give you a balanced review. Quite frankly, there was very little to dislike about our stay at the Carolina Inn. There’s a reason why the Governor and the Obamas have stayed here!

Exceptional art and design

In true boutique hotel style, every room at the Carolina Inn has its own distinct design and décor, ensuring that every room tells its own story and is a one-of-a-kind experience. I can’t wait to see what design we get on our next stay. It’s a no-brainer to return here! Even the hallways and public spaces are filled with art and design details that celebrate the Inn’s connection to Chapel Hill and its community.

The lobby was one of my favorite spots — designed with a cozy, upscale living room vibe. It invites you to linger, whether with a glass of wine in hand or a good book.

My other favorite space is the light-filled long black and white tiled hallway framed with cozy seats with oversized pillows and potted plants along the floor to ceiling windows leading out to the garden views. It’s the perfect place to capture a head shot, photos with a significant other or an “I was here” highlight for your Instagram feed.

If you head outside, and you’ll be amazed by the scenery of the hallowed grounds. There’s the front terrace with comfortable cushioned seating areas around firepits, as well as outside dining tables and expansive lawns, beautiful courtyards to sit and enjoy a meal, afternoon tea, a drink, live music, wedding events and community gatherings…like Fridays on the Porch mentioned below.

Dining at Crossroads: A Culinary Treat

A few weeks back we attended a sneak peak into the Crossroads new springtime bar menu (with cocktails) and loved it. So, we were especially excited to dine at Crossroads Chapel Hill, the Inn’s signature restaurant, and it exceeded every expectation. From the first sip of our cocktails — expertly crafted with thoughtful, unique ingredients — we knew we were in for a treat.

Before I move on – my Tequila Thyme cocktail was the perfect combination of two of my favorite liquors – mezcal and aperol. It was perfectly balanced, refreshing, not too sweet and I loved how it wasn’t over with just a couple of sips.

Pre-dinner drinks

We also enjoyed a pre-dinner drink at the bar the following night, and head bartender, Fernando invited me to try his latest experiment, a mango habanero cocktail made with gin. Again, I loved it – it was unique and well-balanced – not overly sweet like you’d expect from a mango cocktail.

Fernando is passionate about making cocktails (also try his That Tequila Drink) and is always experimenting with produce from the kitchen and loves to chat to fellow Chapel Hill bar tenders and restaurant chefs to spark new creative ideas.

Now back to the restaurant dinner. At Crossroads, Executive Chef Jeremy Blankenship brings the vibrant flavors of North Carolina to life with seasonal menus, locally sourced ingredients, and creative twists on classic Carolina dishes. It’s a perfect blend of refined Southern cuisine and easygoing elegance—every dish is a delicious tribute to the region.

We started with fresh oysters with strawberry mignonette, horseradish, fried saltine and the most incredible carrot and coconut soup (yes, it sounds unusual, but it was silky, flavorful, and unforgettable).

For mains, we went all in: the harissa lamb shank was fall-off-the-bone tender, and the filet mignon was cooked to perfection. Nothing pairs better with lamb than a McLaren Vale shiraz (hello Australia – so great to taste you again!)

For gluten free my only dessert options was ice cream or sorbet – not my preference – which was fine as I chose a dessert cocktail instead and Craig enjoyed a silky-smooth chocolate cherry budino cake. To top off a great meal, our server Connor was excellent – hopefully you get him when you dine at Crossroads!

And let’s talk breakfast. The Sunday buffet in the sunlit dining room was next level. There was an entire table dedicated just to sweets and cakes—so beautifully presented it almost felt like a wedding spread.

I admit, I was both slightly jealous that none were gluten-free, and wildly relieved because I would’ve had zero self-control otherwise. Don’t have a sweet tooth? No problem, the brunch buffet is full of savory and hot items like bacon, sausages, made-to-order omelets, roasted vegetables, pork loin, smoked salmon, bagels, pastries and so much more!

On Sundays, Crossroads restaurant only offers brunch. Be sure to make a reservation, as non-guests can also dine here and it’s a popular spot.

Fridays on the Front Porch: A Local Tradition

One of the highlights of our stay was experiencing Fridays on the Front Porch, a beloved local tradition hosted right in the Inn’s garden area. With an outdoor bar, tasty bites, and live music, it felt like a community block party—with better drinks and prettier views.

It’s held April through May and again in August through October, and if your visit overlaps, don’t miss it. It’s the perfect way to tap into that friendly, laid-back Chapel Hill vibe.

If the line is too long at the outside bar, or you prefer the larger drink menu inside, you can order drinks from Crossroads bar and take them outside. They will be slightly higher priced, however. We did find the cocktails expensive at $20, but they were unique and high quality.

Other things about the Carolina Inn we loved

• The Staff: Warm, welcoming, and incredibly helpful. Everyone we encountered went out of their way to ensure our stay was seamless.
• English Feel & Southern Style: I loved the English feel of the brick building and gardens and the interior design that oozed Southern Charm
• Location: You couldn’t ask for better. Right on UNC’s campus, a short stroll to Franklin Street, and close to all the downtown restaurants, shops, and university attractions. We brought our bikes to explore the nearby greenways, and if our Chapel Hill itinerary wasn’t so packed, we would have ridden our bikes around town and into Carrboro. We loved being able to walk to the Crunkleton and back again for a few after dinner drinks!
• Fitness Center: UNC fans will get a kick out of the punching bag printed with Duke and NC State logos. It’s cheeky and fun—and maybe a little therapeutic during rivalry week.
• Awards & Accolades: The Carolina Inn is an AAA Four Diamond property, part of the Historic Hotels of America, and consistently ranks as one of the top hotels in North Carolina. After our experience, we were not surprised.

The Verdict: Would we recommend a stay at The Carolina Inn

If you’re visiting Chapel Hill — whether for a graduation, a UNC game, a romantic weekend, or a leisurely getaway — The Carolina Inn is the kind of place that makes your visit feel special. So yes, we would definitely recommend The Carolina Inn for a special occasion.

It’s not just a hotel — it’s a heartfelt experience that captures the warmth, pride, and timeless beauty of this college town. The Carolina Inn is one of the finest historic hotels in the Triangle. It embodies the heart, spirit, and story of our favorite university in the USA. And yes, we know we run a Raleigh site (go Wolfpack!), but we were Tar Heel fans long before This is Raleigh ever began.
