If you’re planning on visiting Duke University in Durham, you’re not short of accommodation near Duke’s leafy campus to use as your base. However, Durham isn’t a one-size-fits-all destination. You can wake up in a grand, historic inn with polished wood floors or in a sleek boutique hotel that feels more like an art gallery than a hotel.

Choosing where to stay in Durham isn’t just about location, but about getting to know the city. You could stay in a standard hotel, but why do that when there are charming B&Bs and boutique hotels tucked just streets away from the campus? If you’re visiting Duke University, whether on a college tour or to watch a Duke sporting event and need to stay close by, these are all the best places to stay within a stone’s throw of the campus.
Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club

The Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club is a stately Georgian hotel that sits on the Duke University campus. It’s best known for its iconic 18-hole Championship golf course, as well as afternoon experiences, which we have experienced both of, but it’s a lot more than that. Despite being within walking distance of Duke University, it sits on 300 acres of university property and is surrounded by towering pines. It has an old English stately home vibe, paired with classic Southern hospitality. It feels luxurious, but without being in-your-face with it.

It has 271 guest rooms and suites, three on-site restaurants, and beautiful gardens with nature trails through Duke Forest. For those who enjoy sports and recreation, there is an indoor swimming pool and hot tub, as well as a fitness center and yoga classes available for guests. As a four-star hotel, prices are on the upper scale, but if you are looking for a slice of luxury with a convenient location, it would be our number one choice.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Washington Duke Inn earlier this year. We found our suite classy and comfortable, the restaurant to be an outstanding experience, service was excellent, the bar was a community gathering spot, and our golf lesson elevated its unique Triangle accommodation experience even further. Read our full review of a stay at the Washington Duke Inn. We also love their afternoon tea – they have the best gluten free scones!
The Lodge at Duke Medical Center

The Lodge at Duke Medical Center is another hotel that sits practically on Duke university campus and is one of the main hotels next to Duke University Hospital, making it an ideal choice for patients and family members of patients at the hospital. It offers oversized guest rooms which overlook the hospital campus, and each room comes with a seating area, a large double bed with plush bedding, a 48” TV, and a desk/workspace.
The hotel also has a complimentary shuttle to Duke University Hospital and has an on-site café where you can pick up quick bites and snacks.
Relaxation and comfort are of utmost importance here, so guests staying at the lodge can also take advantage of the services offered by the Washington Duke Inn and JB Hotel, also on the university campus. Guests can enjoy a complimentary Saturday morning yoga class or weekly stargazing session at the Washington Duke Inn, as well as play on the Championship Duke University Golf Club Course or dine in the dining rooms there.
JB Duke Hotel

If you like the location of the Washington Duke Inn but are not a fan of the price tag, then the JB Duke Hotel would be our next best option. It’s the second hotel that sits across the road on the university campus. Guests staying at the JB Duke Hotel can also use the facilities of the Washington Duke Inn, including the restaurants and golf course.
The JB Duke Hotel is a stylish and contemporary hotel with modern amenities. Surrounded by the pines of the Duke Forest, you wouldn’t think it was just a short walk from the Fuqua School of Business! All rooms and suites come with luxury bedding and spacious living areas, and there is also a “Third Night Free” package for those visiting for longer than a couple of days.
It also has a tennis court, outdoor swimming pool, expansive patio with fire pit, and Bocce Ball and Pickleball courts. There’s also a lounge and bar which serves craft cocktails and also hosts regular events.
AC Hotel Durham

The AC Hotel is a 3-star Marriott hotel is a 10-minute walk from the campus and the hospital. It has an ultra-modern design, with accented wood furnishings and polished floors, and it feels both stylish and comfortable. Rooms are spacious and airy, with floor-to-ceiling windows and lots of space to move around. Each room comes with a seating area, workspace, and a large double bed with hypoallergenic bedding.
The hotel also has amenities with comfort in mind; the garden area is the perfect place to unwind with a book, or come nightfall, the bar has a low-key vibe where you can get craft cocktails. It also has a 24-hour business center, a small but well-equipped gym, and an on-site restaurant serving up a buffet breakfast each day (for a fee). We stayed at the AC Hotel in Durham before and really liked it, especially if you want to be in the Duke University /hospital area.
University Inn Durham

Now, if you need a place to stay that’s cheap and cheerful, the University Inn Durham is a 2-star hotel that’s basic but comfortable. It’s located right next to the hospital, so it’s ideal for patients and family members of patients who need to stay nearby.
University Inn is clean and well-maintained. The staff is friendly and helpful, and there is an ample supply of free tea and coffee in the lobby, as well as snacks and microwaveable treats for those who need a quick bite to eat. It has a free shuttle service to the hospital and anywhere in the city within 3-miles, making it an ideal choice for those who don’t drive or need some mobility support.
Hilton Garden Inn Durham/University Medical Center

Just a 12-minute walk away from Duke University Central Campus and two blocks away from Duke East Campus, the Hilton Garden Inn Durham/University Medical Center is in that sweet spot between campuses, making it one of the most convenient stays. It’s a 3-star hotel with an affordable price tag, so don’t expect opulence here. The decor is unfussy but polished throughout the hotel. Rooms are bright and spacious, equipped with all the practical touches that matter, such as mini-fridges, microwaves and a large workspace.
The hotel facilities are also basic but just about enough. There’s a well-kept indoor pool that’s small but good enough to soak in after wandering the campus, as well as a compact fitness center that has a small selection of free weights and a few machines. The social heart is the Garden Grille & Bar, where cooked-to-order breakfasts and low-key evening meals spare you the need to venture into downtown, but if you do fancy venturing out, you’re not too many steps away from Durham’s lively Ninth Street District, where you’ll find cute cafés, student hangouts, and indie shops.
Residence Inn Durham McPherson/Duke University Medical Center

If you’re visiting Duke East Campus, the Residence Inn Durham McPherson/Duke University Medical Center would be a better option, as it sits right between the cool warehouse district and the East Campus. The all-suite setup is the real draw. Whether you opt for a studio or one-bedroom suite, each room has a distinct living, sleeping, and cooking space with a fully equipped kitchen, making it ideal for longer stays.
Despite having self-catering facilities, there’s also a complimentary hot breakfast on offer each day, as well as a grocery shopping service, so you will never go hungry. The rest of the hotel’s facilities are practical and thoughtful. There’s a fitness center, on-site laundry, a small convenience store, and a shuttle service within a three-mile radius.
Durham Marriott City Center

Right in the thick of downtown Durham, the Durham Marriott City Center is the perfect option for those who want to be close to the campus but also check out the main pulse of the city. Prospective college students or transferring faculty members may want to stay amid the city’s brick-lined streets and repurposed warehouses to get a feel for the area they are relocating to, but also stay within about two miles of Duke University.
The hotel itself is clean and contemporary in style, with rooms that offer huge windows with views overlooking the city, and an understated design that’s still homey. With plush bedding and well-sized work desks, they are both comfortable and functional. Facilities include a polished fitness center, extensive meeting and event spaces, and a full-service restaurant and bar — though, truth be told, you’re steps from some of Durham’s most interesting dining options, so lingering out is half the appeal. In fact, the Durham Performing Arts Center is just around the corner, and the revitalised American Tobacco Campus is a short stroll away.
Aloft Downtown Durham

Another hotel in downtown that offers convenient access to downtown, and the university campus is Aloft Downtown Durham, which is set squarely in the heart of the American Tobacco Campus and next to DPAC. The aesthetic loft-style rooms have an open-plan and industrial quality to them, with platform beds and oversized windows, which give a sense of space even though the rooms are quite small.
It has a sociable vibe, with the WXYZ bar acting as a buzzing living room of sorts. It has craft cocktails, live music, and a low-key crowd drifting in from the streets. There’s also a 24-hour fitness center, a second-floor outdoor pool with skyline views, and a lounge with a pool table. It’s ideal for those who want to pair a Duke visit with a dose of downtown energy. It’s just a 30-minute walk from East Campus and a 45-minute walk to Duke University Central Campus.
Home2 Suites by Hilton Duke University Medical Center

A little removed from the immediate bustle of campus, Home2 Suites is a 7-minute drive from Duke University Central Campus, but it is surrounded by dining options and has a quieter vibe. The benefit of staying at Home2 Suites by Hilton Duke University Medical Center is that it has extended-stay living, so if you’re relocating to Durham and haven’t found an apartment yet, this is a great budget-friendly stopgap.
Suites are designed with flexibility in mind: think open layouts, movable furniture, and crucially, kitchens that have a full-size fridge and freezer and are ideal for longer visits. There’s a sense here of settling in rather than passing through. The rest of the hotel’s facilities lean into that self-sufficient ethos. A complimentary hot breakfast is offered each morning, and on warm days, the seasonal outdoor pool is a great place to relax. It also has a small but decent fitness center and a weekday shuttle within a five-mile radius. It’s also pet-friendly.
Hilton Durham near Duke University

Just beyond the immediate orbit of campus and next to the aforementioned Home2 Suites, the Hilton Durham is a spacious, quietly suburban Duke stay. It’s around two miles from the main university campus and medical center, allowing for quick access but still removed enough to feel unhurried and quiet. Plus, there’s a complimentary shuttle smoothing the journey back and forth.
Rooms are generous in size and comfortable, most of them with large work desks, streaming-ready TVs, and seating areas that make it easy to settle in. As a Hilton hotel, you can expect the decor to be polished, practical, and stylish. When you’re done exploring the university, head to The Bluestone Grille & Bar for simple American cuisine. This is where to go for breakfast (for a fee) or for barbecue-led dinners.
If you want to keep up with your fitness routine, there is a seasonal outdoor pool and well-equipped fitness center to take advantage of. It also has extensive meeting and event spaces, EV charging and pet-friendly rooms, as well as family rooms.
