Christmas trees, whether bought from farms or pop-up stores, are usually on sale from the weekend after Thanksgiving (Saturday 29th November) until all trees are sold out. It’s a good idea to keep an eye on their social media pages to see if stock is available before you visit. So we have included the social media pages for each place below to make this easier for you.

We’ve also picked locations within a 30-minute drive from Downtown, as I’m sure you’ll want to get home fast with a tree strapped to your car roof!

Choose and Cut Christmas Trees in the Triangle

Boyce Farms, Raleigh

  • Address: 2813 Mount Vernon Church Rd.
  • Opens from: usually the weekend after Thanksgiving
  • Types of tree: White Pines, Leyland Cypress, Blue Ice, Carolina Sapphire, NC Fraser Firs
  • Socials: Facebook | Instagram | Website

Boyce Farms is the most famous Choose & Cut Christmas Tree farm in Raleigh, and in 2025, they have a limited supply of choose and cut trees to choose from, so we recommend the eager beavers get out to Boyce Farms early to chop their trees.

Even if the choose and cut trees have all gone, they also have pre-cut trees to choose from, including a wonderful supply of fresh Fraser Firs from the North Carolina mountains.

If you’ve never chosen and cut your tree before, this is a good place to try it for the First time, as they provide instructions and also have saws you can use (you can bring your own if you desire, but no chain saws). If you chicken out at the last minute, they will gladly cut it for you. They will also net your tree and load/tie it to your vehicle for free.

NOTE: Their website is currently not working, and I can’t ascertain from their socials if this is operating. If I can’t find information soon, I will remove it from this post.

At Neighbor Boy Adventure Farm’s Christmas Wonderland, the holidays feel cozy, nostalgic, and fun. It’s more than picking out a premium nursery-grade tree — families love the kids’ play areas, fire pits, s’mores, and the best complimentary homemade hot chocolate. Wander the rows, find your perfect tree, and enjoy the tradition of “dancing with your tree” as they shake and prep it for you.

Bring your stand and they’ll attach it, then handle everything from carrying and cutting to baling and loading, so all you have to do is slow down, savor the moment, and soak up the season. Free reservations are only needed on Thanksgiving weekend.

Back for another Christmas Season, Jordan Lake Tree Farm is open on the weekends following Thanksgiving until the weekend of the 6th and 7th, December. Due to popular demand, you need to make a reservation (except for the opening weekend of the 22nd and 23rd), and reservations can be made from Friday, 7th November.

This year, along with choose and cut Christmas Trees, there will be wreath-making workshops, a Christmas shop, a concession stand with hot drinks and snacks, hay rides, a kids’ playground with a bounce house, and photographers.

Choose and cut trees are priced at $8-$12 per foot, and the field closes at 5pm. You can tag a tree from opening weekend, and the last day to cut your tree is December 19th. Although it’s advertised as choose and cut, they don’t actually allow the public to cut it, but specially trained staff do it.  They also sell fresh-cut NC Fraser Firs and table-top NC Fraser Firs, and fresh wreaths.

As well as trees, there are also wreaths, garlands, and customized holiday home décor up for sale.

The trees are grown in the Appalachian mountains using a low-spray pesticide, and are hand-pruned and intentionally harvested less than a week before Thanksgiving to ensure freshness. Keep an eye on their socials, as sometimes Santa Claus visits!

How to pick the right Christmas Tree

family cutting christmas trees at sunset

It’s all well and good knowing where to get a Christmas tree, but if you’re someone who’s previously bought a Christmas tree that looked lovely in the shop and was a brown stick three days later, then here are some tips we’ve picked up about picking the right Christmas tree.

Choosing a species of tree

First, you need to consider the type of tree. Traditionally, a Christmas tree is an evergreen spruce tree, of which there are several varieties.

In Raleigh, the Fraser Fir is the most commonly found type. The Fraser Fir is native to the southeastern Appalachian Mountain region, western North Carolina, and eastern Tennessee. It’s estimated that 50 million Fraser Firs are grown in North Carolina alone, which represents over 90% of all Christmas trees grown in NC. Fraser Firs are known to have excellent needle retention and sturdy branches, making them an ideal choice if you’re planning on going all out and exploding a bauble collection over it.

Other popular types of trees you’ll find in Raleigh are White Pines, Leyland Cypress, Concolor Firs, and Blue Spruces.

Pre-cut trees vs. potted vs. choose-and-cut

The way in which you buy a tree these days isn’t as simple as rocking up to a garden center and saying, “I’ll take that one, please,” and then driving off with it. Now you can choose between a pre-cut Christmas tree, a pot-grown tree, or choose and cut your own.

If you choose a pre-cut tree, make sure that it is open and not already wrapped or netted. This way, you can check how dense the branches are and see how brittle the needles are. It should also be standing in water to keep it alive and healthy. Check to see if needles are bent or falling off, give it a quick shake to see if anything falls off, and of course, be sure to check the measurement that it fits through your front door and in the space you want it.

For potted trees, check that the tree has been grown in the pot that it’s currently in. The reason for this is so the roots can spread out and remain undeterred, meaning they will be healthier. Like the pre-cut tree, check that it’s healthy by giving it a shake and watching if needles fall, check for signs of bugs, and brittle branches.

Choosing to cut your own tree is a little more complicated. Like the above-mentioned, do your due diligence to pick a healthy tree by checking needle retention and the strength of branches, and then cut straight across the trunk at the bottom, making a clean, straight cut. Try not to make a V-shape, as this will make it unstable, and it won’t fit in a stand. If you need help, choose-and-cut farms usually have someone on hand to direct you and offer guidance.
