They say the prettiest time of day is Golden Hour, when the sun’s rays disappear below the horizon and illuminate the sky in vibrant shades of pinks and oranges.
The sunsets in Raleigh can be gorgeous if you’re in the right spot at the right time, therefore the beauty of the spectacle is much about the place you watch it from than the event itself. So, if you’re wondering where to go to find the best sunset in Raleigh, this guide is for you.
Lake Crabtree
One spot with amazing sunset hues mirrored in the water is at Lake Crabtree County Park, a tranquil waterside escape approximately a 15-minute drive northwest from downtown Raleigh. It offers unbeatable views of the sky’s changing colors as the sun sinks behind the treeline, reflecting both trees and passing planes from RDU Airport in the glassy waters.
Head to the Lake Crabtree County Park Boat Rentals area to get a front-row seat to the glowing sky and to watch the sun dipping below the treeline. If you prefer a more immersive experience, hop in a kayak or launch a stand-up paddle board and paddle out into the lake for a panoramic, 360-degree sunset spectacle.
Flowers Field, Dorothea Dix Park
If you’re chasing beauty and golden hour magic, Dorothea Dix Park always delivers – especially from the rolling lawn at the Flowers Field. It’s an iconic Raleigh view with the downtown skyline peeking above the trees, and when that sunset glow hits just right, the whole field feels like a dreamscape.
Bring a picnic blanket and some snacks and watch the sky transform behind the city. It’s an especially magical sunset spot in June, when the sunflower fields bloom and the golden light filters through thousands of towering sunflowers—pure joy.
Wye Hill Kitchen & Brewing
The patio at Wye Hill Kitchen & Brewing, located near Boylan Bridge, is another great place in Raleigh to watch a sunset, as it’s located on a hill, giving it a prime vantage point to admire the sun cast its glow on the skyline. Watch the sunset over downtown whilst sipping on a locally brewed craft beer or enjoying a delicious meal. This is just one of the reasons why we fell in love with Wye Hill Kitchen and Brewing!
Lake Johnson
Lake Johnson is one of the most picturesque and peaceful spots to watch the sunset in Raleigh, and it’s also stroller-friendly and easily accessible, making it a great spot for families. Like Lake Crabtree, it offers a waterfront view of the sunset dappling against the water with the treeline in the foreground.
The Lake Johnson boardwalk is the best vantage point to see the sunset stretching across the water. You can also find a secluded spot along the western shoreline trails, where there are some hidden nooks where you can sit and watch the sky change colors.
Alternatively, kayakers and paddle boarders can launch onto the lake and observe a unique sunset from all sides from the water. Be careful where you’re stepping, though, as some people have reported snakes and other wildlife coming out of the bushes here during Golden Hour.
RDU Observation Park
Who said airports are just a place to board a plane? Raleigh-Durham International Airport has an observation tower, RDU Observation Park, where you can admire sweeping views of the airport facilities, specifically the 10,000-foot runway, and watch planes take off and land.
The elevated platform sits near the Air Traffic Control Tower and provides the perfect vantage point to watch the planes in action – kids will love this! There’s also a picnic area, a kids’ play area, and a grassy lawn, plus free parking and restrooms, so it’s perfect for families with kids.
10th & Terrace Rooftop
For a date night setting, head to one of Raleigh’s best rooftop bars with a view, 10th & Terrace, located in the Residence Inn Raleigh Downtown hotel. It has a lovely outdoor patio with gas heaters and high tables, where you can watch the sun set on a warm summer’s eve whilst sipping on your favorite cocktail. Jordan Lake
If you don’t mind a bit of a drive, Jordan Lake has some breathtaking spots to view the sunset from. With its expansive shoreline and peaceful surroundings, Jordan Lake is the perfect place to go to watch the Golden Hour glow over the water.
For the best vantage points, head to Ebenezer Church Recreation Area or Seaforth Beach, where you can relax on the sandy shores and watch the sky transform into a canvas of oranges, pinks, and purples. Jordan Lake’s sunsets are nothing short of magical.
Boylan Bridge
In downtown Raleigh, a free and accessible spot to watch a sunset is from Boylan Bridge, where you can watch the sun’s last bow against the skyline vistas. You don’t see the sun go down behind the skyline from Boylan Bridge, but the sun’s rays wash over the buildings.
Perched above downtown, this iconic spot offers some of our favorite views in Raleigh, as it offers a breathtaking contrast between the warm hues of Mother Nature against the modernity and innovation created by humans. I love seeing the Warehouse District buildings light up golden as the setting sun shines its rays upon them. We’ve seen this sunset so many times.
Lake Wheeler
Another gem for sunset lovers is Lake Wheeler, a scenic setting with wide, open views of the water and the surrounding landscape. A popular spot to watch the sunset from is the boat ramp area, where you can see stunning reflections on the calm lake’s surface.
Alternatively, the Wheeler Creek Trail, which wraps around the shoreline, has several secluded spots along the water where you can sit and enjoy the sunset without being disturbed by others.
North Hills Sunset

Okay, this one might surprise you, but don’t sleep on a North Hills sunset. One Fall evening, we were walking through the new Main St area and caught one of the most jaw-dropping skies we’ve seen in Raleigh – starting with a soft golden glow, then shifting into cotton candy shades of pink and lavender.
The way the light reflects off the buildings adds a cool urban vibe, and you’ll find plenty of spots to sit, sip a drink, and take it all in. Green Hills County Park
Raleigh doesn’t really have many hills to watch the sunset from, but Green Hills County Park is probably one of the city’s best-kept secrets. This former landfill turned into a scenic overlook offers a reasonably high elevation where you can admire sunset views from overlooking downtown. It’s actually one of the highest natural vantage points in the city.
From the summit, you can admire a 360-degree view of a tree-lined horizon. It’s also a bit of a distance out of the city, which offers minimal light pollution and makes the sunset colors more vivid.
Ann & Jim Goodnight Museum Park (NCMA)
Ann and Jim Goodnight Museum Park on the NC Museum of Art campus is another fantastic spot, as it has an open field with unobstructed views of the sky. The hilltop near the art museum is one of the best spots for sunset, as you can observe the sun set over the treetops and the museum.
The large, open space lets you take in the entire sky, which can feel more peaceful. Pairing sunset with a yoga class on the lawn in always a good idea! Check the museum’s even calendar to see when!
Falls Lake State Recreation Area
The City of Oaks is not short of green spaces and natural sites to escape the hustle and bustle. During Golden Hour, one of the popular natural spots to catch a sunset from is Falls Lake State Recreation Area, one of the best places to catch a sunset shimmering on the water in Raleigh.
As the sun dips below the horizon, its golden and crimson hues reflect off the lake’s glassy surface, creating a mesmerizing mirror effect – it’s otherworldly beautiful.
There are multiple vantage points for sunset watching, many of which have expansive water views. Grab a picnic blanket and some drinks and head to Rolling View Picnic Area, where you can watch the sun’s last dance from the tree-lined shore.
Another popular spot is from the bridge at Beaverdam Recreation Area, as the bridge faces west, allowing you to face the sun directly. Another good spot is at Sandling Beach Recreation Area, where you can watch the sunset while sitting on the sandy beach.

I grew up in Raleigh .my dad owned a drug store off Glenwood Ave.it was Melvins pharmacy .back in the 60 and 70 .I had a family member at Dorothea Dix it is a comfort to know a park came out of such a sad depressing place.thank you for the beautiful pictures.are there still row boats on the lake at Umstead Park ?
