From Madre to Moon Room: A Chic & Jazzy Night in Raleigh

We recently enjoyed a fantastic date night with friends, experiencing an unforgettable blend of fine dining and live jazz in Raleigh’s Smoky Hollow district right near Glenwood South.

Our evening began at Madre, one of Raleigh’s most beloved dining establishments, where elegance meets warmth in an inviting atmosphere. This Spanish-inspired tapas restaurant, now approaching its second anniversary, was designed to capture the nurturing essence of home-cooked meals while embracing the vibrant, communal spirit of Mediterranean dining.

Co-owner Tyler Helikson, founder of the Triangle’s favorite healthy fast-food spot Happy + Hale, envisioned Madre as more than just a place to dine – it’s a space where friends and loved ones can gather, share plates, sip fine wine, and indulge in expertly crafted cocktails.

While its foundation is deeply rooted in Spanish cuisine, the menu ventures beyond traditional borders, drawing inspiration from flavors across the Mediterranean region. For those who, like us, appreciate a culinary adventure, this commitment to exploring diverse influences makes Madre a true standout.

Elegance & Atmosphere: The Sophisticated Charm of Madre

Our special occasion for dining at Madre was to catch up with friends we haven’t seen in a while. Picture it: a Brit, two Aussies, and an American walk into a Spanish tapas restaurant – there’s got to be a joke in there somewhere!

From the moment we stepped inside, we were enveloped in warm lighting, stylish decor, and an ambiance that made it feel like a special occasion.

Spanning 5,500 square feet of dining and kitchen space, Madre seamlessly blends industrial chic with organic warmth. Expansive plate glass windows line multiple sides of the restaurant, offering inviting glimpses inside. The hostess kiosk greets guests at the main entrance, taking your coats to the unseen closet to not crowd and uglify your space.

Stylish decor

This Raleigh restaurant elegantly divides into the main dining area to the left and the bar and lounge to the right. The interior design is a sophisticated interplay of textures, featuring blown glass lamps, back-lit pottery displays, and a mix of wood and ceramic elements that add depth and character.

The space is thoughtfully designed – spacious yet intimate – with a secondary dining room tucked behind the main area for a more private experience. While the restaurant hums with energy, the acoustics are well-balanced, allowing for easy conversation without overwhelming noise.

A Culinary Journey: Savoring the Flavors of Madre

We kicked things off at the bar with Madre Margaritas, a well-crafted cocktail made with my favorite – mezcal, that set the perfect tone for the night. You may want to enjoy their latest signature concoction on display at the bar – The Sauce. Just tequila soaking in fresh pineapple juice.

You can have it as a martini or as a shot. We enjoyed ours as a martini as an after-dinner drink and enjoyed its refreshing style.

We then moved to our table and our server, Mike, who was exceptional, offering thoughtful dish recommendations and accommodating our dietary preferences (gluten-free for me and vegetarian for our friend) without hesitation.

For appetizers, we shared a delightful selection of warm negroni olives, Gaufrettes – waffle chips with lime zest, and prosciutto.

Prosciutto / Roasted cauliflower

What followed were two of our favorite dishes of the evening: the roasted cauliflower with chevre crumble and green goddess sauce, and salchipapas, Madre’s take on patatas bravas (but South American style) featuring tender chunks of roasted potato with bits of savory chorizo and drizzled with dijonaise. As a potato addict, I simply say, “Please sir, can I have some more?”

Each dish was full of bold, layered flavors, and they complemented one another beautifully.

Moving on to our mains, we enjoyed trout with embered cream and parsley oil, polenta with pork ragout (with a vegetarian version for our friend), and roasted duck with bok choy and mushroom ju, and delicious squash – honey lacquered with white sauce and dukkah. All dishes were expertly prepared and perfectly portioned.

The meal concluded with a decadent trio of vanilla flan with red wine caramel and blueberry compote, French yoghurt cake with citrus caramel poured through its center and vanilla yoghurt (a favorite of the non-gluten free eaters) cake with honey sauce, and Italian style chocolate fudge topped with hazelnut and sea salt, ensuring we ended on a sweet note.

A friend had raved about Madre’s wine list, and my Anabella Chardonnay certainly lived up to the hype. The selection is carefully curated, taking you on a journey from California to Cape Town by way of the Mediterranean, offering a range of options to satisfy both casual sippers and serious wine lovers.

Behind the Red Drapes: A Night of Jazz at Moon Room

Leaving Madre, we took a short ten-step stroll to the Moon Room, a hidden gem behind a darkened entrance. Pulling back the heavy red drapes, we were transported into an intimate space filled with hanging moon-shaped lanterns, plush couches, and a lively crowd enjoying the sultry sounds of live jazz.

The Moon Room, originally launched last summer as a neighborhood bar by Madre’s owner, Tyler. He quickly saw the need for Raleigh to have a unique and intimate music experience and evolved into one of Raleigh’s premier jazz venues filling the void left by the beloved Seagrace.

Moon Room

We were lucky to catch a performance featuring Al Strong, an incredibly talented trombonist, setting the perfect backdrop for our evening. Tyler mentioned that jazz nights on Wednesdays (jazz jam fest), Fridays, and Saturdays have become a major draw, attracting an eclectic mix of music lovers—including some who wander over from the bars on Glenwood Avenue.

The cocktails at Moon Room are well-crafted, some even available on draft, and all at refreshingly reasonable prices (order the Nutty Itlian). A cozy living-room-style seating area with a wall of hand-picked vinyl records adds to the charm, offering the perfect spot to relax and soak in the music. There’s also plenty of standing room for those who prefer to bop along to the rhythm.

Moon Room

As we mingled, we ran into a few familiar faces, including a couple of This Is Raleigh readers (always great to connect in person). We also met Garret Hitmar, a 22-year-old saxophonist, who has played a key role in growing the jazz scene at Moon Room. He even took the stage for a few songs, showcasing his incredible talent.

The music wrapped up around 11:30 PM, but patrons were welcome to linger until closing at 1:00 AM. Satisfied from an amazing dinner, inspired by live music, and grateful for time with friends, we called it a night, still reveling in the experience.

Moon Room

We love seeing Raleigh develop a more distinct musical identity, and venues like Moon Room are at the heart of this evolution. Last night, we ran into a friend who mentioned that even his mom had raved about Moon Room—a testament to its broad appeal. As we chatted, we encouraged him and his group of 25-year-old friends to switch up their plans for the night and experience it for themselves. Without hesitation, he pulled out his phone and fired off a “Change of Plans” group text.

I love that Moon Room’s magic is catching on, drawing people of all ages to Smoky Hollow and its signature red drapes. Hopefully, more locals and visitors will continue to support these unique spaces, helping to shape and strengthen Raleigh’s live music scene.

Our meal was hosted by Madre. We were under no obligation to write this post, we did because we loved it and know its a valuable and fun experience to share!
