If you’ve lived in Raleigh for any length of time, chances are you’ve heard of the Krispy Kreme Challenge. And if you’ve attended North Carolina State University, you’ve probably been dared to do it. Let me tell you, it’s one of our personal favorite events in Raleigh we look forward to each year!

Equal parts fun, endurance race, community spectacle, and doughnut-fueled madness, the Krispy Kreme Challenge is one of the most unique things to do in Raleigh, and a beloved local tradition that blends fitness, fun, and fundraising for a great cause. Whether you’re running, walking, cheering, or just watching in amazement, here’s everything you need to know about the 2026 Krispy Kreme Challenge.
What Is the Krispy Kreme Challenge?

The Krispy Kreme Challenge is a student-led charity race organized by volunteers at NC State University, benefitting the mission of the UNC Children’s Hospital. The challenge itself is simple…at least on paper:
- Run (or walk) 2.5 miles from the NC State Memorial Belltower
- Stop at the Krispy Kreme on N. Person Street
- Attempt to eat one dozen Original Glazed doughnuts. Yes, 12 doughnuts (or as many as you can)
- Run 2.5 miles back to the Belltower, all within one hour
- That’s 5 miles total, plus a very memorable pit stop.

The mantra says it all:
2400 calories. 12 doughnuts. 5 miles. 1 hour. It’s a true test of physical fitness and gastrointestinal fortitude. Fun Fact: we personally don’t eat the 12 doughnuts, maybe a bite or two, but then our kids take care of the rest, over several days mind you. Oh, and we do a combination of run-walk, and have met some incredibly fun people doing the challenge!
A Fun Raleigh Tradition with Humble Beginnings

What started as a challenge among ten friends at NC State has grown into a nationally recognized charity race and the number one tradition many State students aim to complete before graduation. In its earlier (very fun) days, the race attracted up to 8,000 participants, many of them running in costumes.

While today’s event is more organized and safety-focused, it still carries that playful, anything-goes Raleigh spirit. This event is:
- Suitable for all ages
- Walking-friendly
- Doughnut consumption optional (no shame here!)

We love this uniquely Raleigh event and have done it a couple of times ourselves — even with our kids. And as mentioned, we don’t eat the doughnuts as Caroline is gluten-free, but cheering others on is half the fun.
Giving Back: Why the Challenge Matters

One of the most important and impactful things about the Krispy Kreme Challenge is that it’s 100% organized by student volunteers at NC State, and every dollar raised goes toward supporting children and families through UNC Children’s Hospital.
- $140,000 raised in 2025 alone
- Over $2.3 million donated since the event began
It’s one of those rare events that manages to be wildly entertaining and deeply meaningful that we love to support, and the Triangle area shows up big time each year!

Why Krispy Kreme on Person Street Is Part of the Magic

If you didn’t already know, Krispy Kreme was born and bred in North Carolina, just up the road in Winston-Salem. The N. Person Street location is the second original Krispy Kreme store, making it a perfect (and very Raleigh) destination for the Challenge. And honestly? You can’t visit the Person Street neighborhood without popping in. Just ask our kids, who still rank these doughnuts above every other in Raleigh, and that’s saying something, because Raleigh has plenty of doughnut options!
Should You Do the Krispy Kreme Challenge?

Yes, if you’re looking for a classic Raleigh experience, a fun community event, and a way to support an incredible cause at UNC Children’s Hospital. Or just a great story to tell later. Whether you run, walk, or cheer from the sidelines, the Krispy Kreme Challenge belongs on your Raleigh bucket list.
