Say hello to one of our favorite music venues in the Raleigh region, Koka Booth Amphitheatre, in Cary. It may be outside Raleigh’s borders, but it’s only a 15-20 min drive, so why wouldn’t you?

What makes Koka Booth Amphitheatre unique is its perfect blend of art, nature, and community. It’s so much more than just a concert venue offering cultural events, and festival celebrations in the middle of a tranquil escape.

This guide to Koka Booth will help you understand this local treasure more and how you can make the most of your visit!  

A Glimpse into Koka Booth’s History

Opened in 2000, Koka Booth Amphitheatre, named after former Cary Mayor Koka Booth, was designed to complement its serene surroundings by Symphony Lake. Situated in a wooded area with a greenway trail, it provides a picturesque backdrop for performances.

Designers and planners envisioned it as a cultural hub for Cary, offering a space for community gatherings and events. 

Over the years, it has hosted a wide range of festivals and world-class performances, while maintaining its intimate, welcoming atmosphere. Additionally, the venue supports local non-profits through annual fundraising events. Koka Booth is owned and operated by the Town of Cary. 

The Koka Booth Amphitheater Setting and Experience

We fell in love with Koka Booth when we first moved to Raleigh in 2004 and attended a Jack Johnson concert. We could not believe we were watching one of our favorite artists while sitting in a lush forest by a lake. It’s just another reason we fell in love with Raleigh and chose to make it our permanent home.

How can you say no to a special lifestyle like this?

It’s especially beautiful as dusk moves into night and the sun sets behind the trees and everything softens with an orange glow.

Last night, we saw another iconic performer, John Legend at the amphitheater, and again, I was so wowed by the setting that I had to write this guide. I’m sure many newcomers to Raleigh would not even know Koka Booth exists!

The Amphitheatre is set within fourteen acres of lush hardwoods and pines, with Symphony Lake adding a serene touch to the landscape. The towering trees provide natural shade and a cool breeze that sweeps across the venue during summer events.

The open-air design allows you to connect with nature while enjoying live performances, making it an ideal spot for a relaxing evening under the stars.

Whether you’re seated in the sloped lawn area with a picnic blanket, or in the reserved seating closer to the stage, the experience at Koka Booth Amphitheatre is immersive and intimate.

And since it’s a small venue that has a capacity of around 7,000 people, you can be sure the acoustics are carefully engineered to enhance the sound quality, ensuring that every note reaches the audience with clarity. We were seated at the back on the side near the lake for John Legend and the audio was incredible. 

Types of Shows and Acts at Koka Booth

Koka Booth Amphitheatre hosts a wide variety of performances and events throughout the year that cater to all tastes.

From concerts featuring top artists across various genres to food and beverage nights, cultural festivals and more, the amphitheater hosts over 60 events between the months of April – January,

The venue is known for its diverse programming, which includes:

• Concerts: From nationally touring acts to local bands, the Amphitheatre showcases a broad spectrum of musical genres, including rock, pop, classical, jazz, bluegrass, and country. I’ve mentioned a few already, others include Ziggy Marley, Mt Joy, Melissa Etheridge, and Jewel.
• Symphony Performance: The North Carolina Symphony frequently performs at Koka Booth, offering attendees the chance to enjoy classical music in a stunning outdoor setting.
• Cultural Festivals The venue occasionally hosts fun festivals to highlight other cultures or events that may include theatrical productions and dance performances.
• Movies by Moonlight: During the summer, the Amphitheatre used to screen family-friendly movies, allowing visitors to enjoy a film under the stars. I haven’t seen that for awhile though. Hopefully, they will bring it back as it was an enjoyable evening, especially for families with young kids.
• Food and Beverage festivals: from wine tasting, beer festivals, all you can eat tacos, and bourbon and BBQ events, Koka has many tasty ways for you to connect to the community. 

Ticket Classes and Seating Options

Koka Booth Amphitheatre offers several ticket options to accommodate different preferences:

• General Admission Lawn: The most popular tickets are lawn tickets. It offers a more relaxed (and cheaper) experience where you can sit on low-back chairs (or sometimes blankets) on the sloping grassy area or in the forest.
• Reserved Seating (Gold Circle):  Located closer to the stage, these seats offer an unobstructed view of the performance and come with chairs. Some of the seats are under cover, but there is  a section, at a lower price, which is not.
• Table Seating (Lowes Front Porch): For certain events, tables are available for reservation, offering a more intimate setting with prime views of the stage. The Lowes Food Front Porch has tables and chairs with an elevated view of the stage, although it is at the back of the venue.

Prices for Koka Booth tickets range widely depending on the event, musical act, and seating class.

Our general admission John Legend tickets were $60, and I paid the same for our upcoming Crowded House concert. We’ve also seen Steep Canyon Rangers here and KT Tunstall.

Koka Booth Seasonal Passes

One look at the private member lounge with table topped terraced seating, views of the lake and stage, and private bar and complimentary food had me searching Google for “Membership options at Koka Booth.”

I can really see the value in it if you have that available cash and opportunity to attend a lot of events. (I’m working on it!)

Lawn: Choose your own seating

Another reason to love Koka Booth in Cary is you can bring in your own lawn chairs, and sometimes picnic blankets. It’s just another sign of the relaxed lifestyle we have here in Wake County.

I’ve been to events where spreading out on a blanket worked well as It wasn’t crowded. But other events, like John Legend, which was lawn chair to lawn chair, there would be no space for that (and you needed the height).

If you are General Admission (aka lawn seats) at Koka booth, it is choosing your own spot. So, the earlier you come the better your chances of getting an ideal spot closer to the stage without obstructions. Sold out shows will have little options if you come late. You may end up having to stand!

Look to the forest wings – you can sometimes get better views here than in the middle of the lawn, as some of those spots may be obstructed by the sound booth and lighting towers – Koka Booth does rent out chairs as well. 

Koka Booth is Accessible

All venue gates are accessible for guests with disabilities. All walkways to and from the gates to the seating areas are paved. Ramps are located on the Crescent Deck to access the lawn area and Reserved seating area.

There is accessible parking and seating; sign interpreters can be arranging, as can listening devices. They have partnered with Kulture City to make events sensory inclusive. Learn more about accessibility here.

Food and Drink at Koka Booth

Koka Booth Amphitheatre offers a range of food and beverage options, from on-site concession stands to local food trucks.

Attendees can enjoy everything from gourmet sandwiches and salads to classic festival fare like pretzels and popcorn. They do have a limited gluten free menu at the Café as well.

 The venue also offers a selection of craft beers, wines, and cocktails, making it easy to unwind and enjoy the show.

The Lowes Food Front Porch has the Cafe’ and Cobblestone Courtyard is located just inside the path from the main gate and some events will have food trucks in the forest (You can also take food to your chairs)

Or, they have picnics you can order virtually before certain events that will be delivered to you when you arrive!

There will also be small drink carts situated around the Amphitheatre. I was surprised to see bottles of wine for sale as well!

For most events you cannot bring your own food or drink, especially alcohol, but always check the condition of each event in case it changes.

What can you bring into Koka Booth?

It’s important to note that there is no standard policy for what you can bring into Koka Booth. It’s all dependent on the event, so the rules change. Be sure to check your particular event to see what is and isn’t allowed. Of course, you know there will be standard exclusions like weapons.

• Empty reusable water bottle (up to 1 L) and fill it at the refillable water stations. Another reason Koka Booth is a standout music venue in Raleigh. 
• Picnic Blankets: Perfect for lawn seating. (but check cause sometimes you can’t)
• Low-Back Chairs: Allowed in the lawn area, ensuring that everyone has a clear view. They cannot have any footrests. (Be mindful of space!!)
• Sunscreen and Hats: For daytime events, sun protection is a must.
• Mosquito repellant: Yes, you may need it. They were hungry at John Legend! 

Annual Events at Koka Booth

Koka Booth Amphitheatre is home to several highly anticipated annual events, each with its own unique charm:

• Independence Day Celebration & Fireworks (July 4th) includes rides and games, watermelon-eating contests, a 50-foot Ferris wheel, live music and fireworks over Symphony Lake. This is a rare FREE event. Plan accordingly as traffic is meant to be a nightmare.
• Beer, Bourbon & BBQ Festival (Aug): A celebration of Southern cuisine and spirits, this festival features a variety of bourbon tastings, live music, and, of course, plenty of delicious BBQ.
• Night Nation Run (Aug) The Night Nation Run is the World’s first Running Music Festival the ultimate blend of a Music Festival and a Fun Run. 
• Whiskey, Wine and Fire (Sept) An Elegant Foodie Evening in the Pines!  With Whiskey Bars, Elegant Wines & Cocktails, Great Music, Tented Food Stations, Food Trucks, & Restaurants and intimate firepits.
• Annual Asia Fest with Dragon Boat Racing (Sept): Celebrating Asia with cultural displays, exciting games, unique performances, and of course, the signature dragon boat race 
• The Cary Diwali Festival (Oct) includes music, dance, theater performances, a handicraft bazaar, Indian food vendors, sponsor booths, an exhibition of Indian art and culture, and activities for children.
• Triangle Oktoberfest (Oct) the largest and most authentic German festival in NC to celebrate German culture in the Triangle with music, German games, food, beer and music. See other Oktoberfest events in Raleigh here.
• NC Wine Festival (Oct) Celebrate local North Carolina wineries, artisans, music, food trucks and fun. (You may like these wine bars in Raleigh.)
• North Carolina Chinese Lantern Festival (Nov): This dazzling event lights up the Amphitheatre with intricately designed lanterns and cultural performances, attracting visitors from all over the region. It’s one of the best Holiday events in Wake County.

Parking for Koka Booth

Parking is free for most events at Koka Booth. for now! But there are only 1,500 spaces. Do the math on that for a venue that holds 7,000 people.

Expect a lot of traffic coming in and out of the venue as streets merge into one way, and lines move slowly. It would be ideal to arrive as early as possible to escape the wait.

We parked in a commercial lot across the road – as directed by parking attendants, and we weren’t charged. But these private businesses can sometimes charge.

You may even want to look at parking in neighboring areas and walking in so you can bypass a lot of that traffic coming in and out!

There are usually a lot of staff directing traffic on event nights, so they’ll show you which parking lot to go to, as they have the latest intel as to which ones are full or not. We did see people tailgating in the parking lot if this is your thing!

There are also paid premier parking options for $20- $25.

Of course, there is also the rideshare option – especially if you plan to drink. 

Getting to Koka Booth

Koka Booth Amphitheatre is in the Regency Park area of Cary located at 8003 Regency Parkway. 

The venue is easily accessible from several major roads, making it easy for people to get to from all over the Triangle. 

• It’s minutes away from the intersection of US-1/US-64 and Tryon Road, providing quick access from Raleigh, Apex, and other surrounding areas. 
• Near major thoroughfares such as I-40 and I-440, which connect Cary to the broader Triangle region. 
• The venue is well-signposted, ensuring a smooth and hassle-free arrival for all guests.

Special Tips for Attending an Event at Koka Booth

• Arrive Early: Parking is free but can fill up quickly, especially for popular events. Arriving early ensures you get a good spot and time to settle in.
• Dress Comfortably: With the natural setting and potential for varying weather conditions, it’s a good idea to wear layers and bring a light jacket or blanket for cooler evenings. Any attire is acceptable! If there has been a lot of rain, you’ll want shoes that can handle soft, wet ground and possible mud. Perhaps bring a poncho! Rain is always possible in the Carolinas.
• Check the Event Policies: Policies on what you can bring in may vary depending on the event, so it’s always a good idea to check the venue’s website for the latest information.
• Stay Hydrated: North Carolina summers can be hot, so be sure to bring water or purchase it on-site to stay hydrated. Reusable bottles are the BEST option.
• It’s a cashless venue.
• Bag policy changes for each event. A small clutch or clear bag is always the safe bet.
• Restrooms are available inside the venue on Lowes Foods Front Porch and the Concession plaza in the Cobblestone Courtyard. All restrooms are accessible for our guests with disabilities and are equipped with infant changing stations. Staff are usually great at helping direct bathroom traffic.
• Events usually happen rain or shine, except in dangerous conditions! Usually in the summer thunderstorms roll in and out quickly, so events may experience delays. Stay up to date with Koka Booth for current updates. 
• Staff are plentiful and kind: Be kind in return! Ask staff for help when needed, they are very friendly and helpful and really make events run smoothly.

Hotels near Koka Booth

You may be visiting from outside of Wake County to attend an event at Koka Booth. You may want to stay in Cary near the venue. Here are a few hotel options for you.

• The Homewood Suites by Hilton Raleigh/Cary is two miles from Koka Booth and within walking distance to Macgregor Village Shopping. Includes spacious suites, free hot breakfast, free parking, and pet-friendly rooms.
• Courtyard by Marriott Raleigh/Cary is 3 min drive (30 min walk) to Koka Booth and is situated within McGregor Village shopping district. It has free parking, a seasonal outdoor pool, a firepit and onsite restaurant.
• Hampton Inn Raleigh/Cary has free to-go breakfast, a grocery/convenience store, a terrace, and seasonal pool. It is a 3 min drive (30 min walk) to Koka Booth. Also located within walking distance of Waverly Place shopping district.
• Sonesta ES Suites Raleigh Cary:  Only a 15-minute walk to Koka, this hotel in Cary offers free-to-go breakfast, an outdoor pool, and spacious suites. (this would be my pick for the walkability!!)
