When the fast-paced, bustling life of Raleigh gets too much, you might be looking to recharge your batteries in small-town life, where the communities are close-knit, where the biggest decision you have to make is latte or Americano, and the scenic beauty is unparalleled.
We’re fortunate to have some of the cutest small towns in North Carolina, packed with oodles of charm, history, and warm Southern hospitality. These towns are the perfect getaway for those who need a cozy vibe, and a slower pace of life to ebb those city stresses away.
Beaufort
- Distance from Raleigh: 2 hours, 45 minutes
- How many days to spend there: 2-3 days
Beaufort is a fascinating and pretty coastal town brimming with history and natural beauty. It was founded in 1709, making it North Carolina’s third-oldest town. It has a deep maritime history and was once a bustling seaport, said to have been visited by pirates, including the infamous Blackbeard.
Today, Beaufort has retained a lot of its historic charm, which can be seen in its lovingly preserved 18th and 19th-century homes. Wander around the Beaufort Historic Site to see some of the most exquisite examples from that era.
It also has a lovely waterfront area which meets the shores of the Crystal Coast, and has a lively marina with easy access to barrier islands like Shackleford Banks and Rachel Carson Reserve, where you can see wild horses.
Some popular attractions in Beaufort are the North Carolina Maritime Museum, Fort Macon State Park, the Old Burying Grounds (the town’s oldest cemetery), and if you have kids, take them on a pirate adventure with Beaufort Pirates Revenge – they will love it. Boone

For mountain serenity and storybook beauty, head to Boone in the Blue Ridge Mountains for your nature escape. Boone is a picturesque mountain town known for its gorgeous natural beauty and access to plenty of outdoor adventures.
It’s small and historic, and exudes a cozy, small-town charm with its mix of historic buildings and modern attractions. What makes Boone unique is that, although set within a peaceful mountain landscape, it has a vibrant college town spirit, as it’s home to Appalachian State University.
Brookshire Park Trail / Lost Province brewery
It has eclectic boutique shops, farm-to-table dining, and miles of hiking trails. One of the most popular things to do in Boone is to drive the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway and stop by its many overlooks and viewpoints. And, you can go skiing at nearby resorts during winter, or tubing on the Watauga River in the warmer months – it’s the perfect small-town getaway for a few days!
Banner Elk

Banner Elk is a hidden gem in the High Country, perfect for getaways in leaf peeping season to admire fall foliage and for winter skiing. This enchanting small town is nestled in the highlands of the Blue Ridge Mountains, which has breathtaking scenery that resembles the Scottish Highlands – it made it onto our list of towns in North Carolina that look just like Europe!
It was once known as a popular summer resort for wealthy families, but today Banner Elk is an affordable destination that has quaint charm and modern mountain attractions.
It’s home to two popular ski resorts, Beech Mountain and Sugar Mountain, which offer pretty good skiing in the winter and hiking and mountain biking in the summer. It’s also within a short distance of the famous Grandfather Mountain, and you can also access the world-famous Appalachian Trail not far from here.
Hillsborough

For a mix of history, art, and a picturesque downtown vibe, head to the cute small town of Hillsborough. This charming small town feels like stepping back in time, with its well-preserved late 18th to early 20th century buildings and historic landmarks. Explore the Old Town Cemetery, the Alexander Dickson House, and the beautiful Colonial Inn for some fine examples of period architecture.
Hillsborough also has a vibrant arts scene. You’ll find numerous galleries and antique shops in its downtown, but the town really comes to life on the last Friday of the month. This is when the Last Fridays & the Art Walk monthly event takes place, which features local artists and live music.
Hillsborough is visually stunning, with the Eno River running through the town. It’s within a short distance of Durham and Eno River State Park, a serene park with hiking trails, waterfalls, and dark skies for stargazing. See all things to do in Hillsborough.
Edenton

Edenton exudes Southern elegance and charm with its numerous historic landmarks and serene waterfront. It’s one of North Carolina’s oldest towns and was once the colonial capital, and much of this history lives on in the 18th-century homes and buildings.
The stunning historic Cupola House is a Historic National Landmark built in 1758 and is considered the finest wooden example of the Jacobean Style of architecture in the South and is known for its Colonial Revival Gardens. Take a stroll around the Historic Edenton State Historic Site and admire the architecture and sleepy atmosphere of the tree-lined streets.
Then walk over to Roanoke River Lighthouse for sunset over the water. Otherwise, aside from sitting in cafes and admiring old-town architecture, there’s not a huge amount to do in Edenton, which is exactly why we like it. It’s small, cozy, and peaceful. New Bern

New Bern is the place to go for riverfront charm and a slow pace of life. It’s known for being the original capital of North Carolina, but more people know it these days as the birthplace of the drinks brand, Pepsi.
Although a cute town, it’s far from sleepy. It’s steeped in history and lavish architecture, as it is one of the oldest towns in the state. The historic district is filled with beautifully preserved buildings, the most impressive of which is the Tryon Palace, the former colonial governor’s mansion.
As well as all the historic sites and attractions, New Bern is also visually striking with the Neuse and Trent Rivers hugging either side of it. Head to the point where these two rivers meet, Union Point Park, at sunset for incredible vistas.
Morganton

Another charming small town nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains is Morganton, which is famous for being the first chartered town in North Carolina. It has a quaint, alpine vibe. Its well-preserved historic buildings framed by mountains and forests make it the ideal getaway location for those who want to combine adventure and relaxation.
Its location cannot be beaten for hikers. It’s within close proximity to the Pisgah National Forest, Lake James State Park, and the Catawba River, perfect for nature lover and adventurers! See all things to do.
Bath

Bath is North Carolina’s oldest town, founded in 1705. Much of this history can still be seen at Bath Historic District, a living museum of several houses and buildings. Head to the visitor center for guided tours of important buildings on the site, such as the Bonner House and the lavish Palmer-Marsh House.
The rest of Bath exudes colonial charm and has a peaceful atmosphere. It has a scenic waterfront location where the Bath Creek and Pamlico River meet and has quiet tree-lined streets and small parks.
Bath doesn’t boast many big-ticket attractions, but that’s what makes it cute. Simply kick back and relax at Bonner’s Point with a book or catch a sunset view, or head to nearby Goose Creek State Park for nature trails, swimming, and fishing. It made the local’s list for most beautiful places in North Carolina.
Tryon

Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Polk County is Tryon, a sweet small town that was a popular retreat for writers and artists but is now a mountain retreat anyone can enjoy. This artistic spirit still lives on in Tryon, with the Tryon Fine Arts Center holding regular exhibitions and performances.
Tryon has a rich equestrian culture and has the nickname “The Town of Horses.” One of the top things to do here is visit stables, attend horse shows, and ride the nearby equestrian trails. Head to Foothills Equestrian Nature Center for horseback riding experiences.
It also has a lot to offer nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Within easy reach of Tryon is the Chimney Rock State Park and the Green River Game Lands, as well as the stunning Pacolet Scenic Byway. Manteo
- Distance from Raleigh: 3 hours

For coastal beauty with a relaxed, film-worthy atmosphere, head to Roanoke Island to the town of Manteo on the Outer Banks, a delightful small town with a rich history and a delightful waterfront setting.
It’s famous for being the first place where English settlers put their roots down in America in 1585, and many of the town’s attractions are related to the story of the Lost Colony. Roanoke Island Festival Park and the Lost Colony Historic Site are two important locations where you can learn about this history.
The town is not all about history, though; its picturesque downtown is filled with locally owned shops, galleries, and restaurants, and there’s a lovely walking trail in the Coastal North Carolina National Wildlife Refuge with waterfront views of the Sound.
Some other popular attractions in Manteo are the North Carolina Aquarium, Fort Raleigh, and the Elizabethan Gardens. You are also within easy reach of other areas in the Outer Banks, such as Nags Head and Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge.
Brevard
- Distance from Raleigh: 4 hours 20 minutes
- How many days to spend there: 1-2 days
Finally, we have Brevard, an adorable small town in Transylvania County, tucked between the Blue Ridge Mountains and the DuPont State Recreational Forest. Brevard is anunderrated North Carolina town often overlooked in favor of Asheville, which is only a 20-minute drive away. However, more people are turning heads because of its attractive museums and historic buildings, and close proximity to natural beauty.
Drive the scenic Pisgah Highway and you’ll find the picture-perfect Looking Glass Falls, as well as several hiking trails in the Pisgah National Forest. Within Brevard, some top sites to check out are the Silvermont Mansion and Park and Transylvania Heritage Museum, or simply stroll down the picturesque Main Street, lined with locally owned shops, cafes, and restaurants.
