That’s where we come in, as we’ve been taste-testing our way around the city and picking our favorite places to eat in Wilmington for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Whether it’s casual pub fare you’re after or a sophisticated seafood joint, there’s something for everyone on this list.
Brasserie du Soleil
Brasserie du Soleil is a must-visit for French-inspired dining in Wilmington, especially if you’re looking for something a little elevated yet still welcoming. My daughter and I had a lovely meal here the night before her UNCW orientation. It was the perfect meal to talk about her future life in Wilmington / Wrightsville!
Located in the charming Lumina Station shopping village, this brasserie serves up refined dishes like coriander-crusted lamb chops, rabbit sausage rigatoni, and what we’re calling the best charred octopus in North Carolina. Save room for dessert—the mini crème brûlée and chocolate pots de crème are the perfect finish.
The interior sparkles with elegant touches, and the outdoor patio beside the tranquil pond makes it an ideal spot for date night, special occasions, or a memorable meal with loved ones. It comes from the same restaurant group as Raleigh’s beloved Coquette, so you can expect the same level of quality and sophistication.

Elijah’s Oyster & Fish Camp
Nestled on the Southern end of the Riverwalk is a veteran seafood restaurant in Wilmington, having opened its doors in 1984. The moment you step through the door, you’re greeted by a barrage of nautical memorabilia and decor, which is unsurprising, as it used to be a maritime museum. On a warm summer’s day, be sure to sit outside on the largest porch on the Riverwalk for incredible sunset views.
When it comes to food, there’s a reason this staple has been going for over 30 years. Focusing on American-style seafood, Elijah’s is the place to go for fresh ocean-to-table dining.
Although Oyster & Fish Camp is in its name, Elijah’s is most famous for its crab – the crabcake sandwich and crab dip always get rave reviews. This was the very first restaurant we ate in Wilmington, thanks to its Dawson’s Creek connection. We’ve returned multiple times with family and friends. My new favorite riveerfront restaurant is just a few steps way …

The Basics
If it’s old-fashioned, hearty Southern cuisine like your grandma used to make that you’re in the mood for, head to The Basics, a homey, farmhouse-style restaurant in downtown Wilmington. With exposed brick walls, chandelier lighting, and round tables with bar stools, this is the place to go if you want a more casual setting to dine in.
The food focuses on Southern fare, and it’s particularly well-known for its breakfast and brunch offerings. Stand-out dishes include the Brunswick Stew, Southern Benedict, shrimp and grits, and Hummingbird Cake.
They also have daily afternoon specials and a Monday night special of half-price appetizers between 5pm and 9pm. Brunch is extremely popular here so reserve ahead and be prepared for a wait. People will line up before 10am opening.

The Pilot House
Another top place to go for seafood in Wilmington is The Pilot House, a historic restaurant founded in 1978. It’s located next door to Elijah’s (mentioned above) and has an amazing view of the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge. Nestled in a restored, 19th-century home with a gorgeous terrace overlooking the river, The Pilot House is the perfect setting for a date night or a special occasion.
When it comes to food, most guests love the crab dip, shrimp and grits, and for those with their stomachs rumbling, the Captain’s Platter is the ideal choice (fried flounder, jumbo shrimp, oysters, and sea scallops) – though it’s definitely big enough to share. We took my visiting parents from Australia and my Dad said, “there was something so special about that restaurant with the beautiful setting sun after a a great day exploring Wilmington.”

Drift Coffee Shop & Kitchen
Tucked away a couple blocks behind the Riverwalk in historic downtown Wilmington is Drift Coffee Shop & Kitchen, our favorite place to go for breakfast in Wilmington.
It’s a small, chic and kitschy coffee shop with whitewashed walls, wooden accents, and hanging lighting. The atmosphere feels laid back and inviting, as though you could easily sit back and sink into a book for hours on end. The coffee is excellent, and they have a good-sized cooked menu, serving breakfast and lunch all day. We love it because they have a lot of gluten-free options!
For something sweet, don’t pass up the Biscoff Stack of pancakes or the Nutella Stuffed French Toast. For something more savory, the breakfast burrito turns a lot of heads! And I love their crispy potato brekkie bowl. You simply can’t lose with their menu. Side note: there is also a lovely branch located in nearby Wrightsville Beach and we love their new(ish) location in Raleigh.

Beer Barrio
Beer Barrio is a lively, must-visit spot in the heart of downtown Wilmington, blending bold flavors, craft beer, and a laid-back vibe. Located on bustling Front Street, it’s the perfect place to unwind after exploring the historic district or strolling along the nearby Riverwalk. I was disappointed it took us several visits to Wilmington before eating here. It’s fantastic!
This family-owned cantina specializes in fresh, scratch-made Mexican-inspired dishes with a creative twist. From their signature tacos and burritos to loaded nachos and house-made salsas, every bite is packed with flavor. Pair your meal with one of their many craft beers (including plenty of local brews) or a handcrafted margarita for the ultimate experience.
We loved their “Beer-B-Q” Pork Taco and the taco bowl, both of which were perfect with a refreshing pint of local IPA and margarita. Our girls suggest you do not skimp out on the delicious French toast dish on the brunch menu. The outdoor patio is a great spot to soak up the downtown atmosphere, making it an ideal choice for both lunch and dinner.

Anne Bonny’s Bar and Grill
Located on the iconic Wilmington Riverwalk, one of Wilmington’s top attractions, Anne Bonny’s Bar and Grill is the only floating barge bar and restaurant in the city. It specializes in Calabash-style seafood, as well as classic pub fare and burgers. It’s most famous for its views overlooking the Cape Fear River, which are best seen at sunset since the restaurant faces West. Some nights they also have live music.
When it comes to food, guests love the giant pretzel for an appetizer, followed by some hearty fish and chips or a Grouper sandwich. Whatever you decide to eat, be sure to pair it with a hand-made cocktail or local craft beer. I wasn’t expecting the food to be as good as it was here. My mum said it was the best salad she had of her whole three weeks visiting us and the chicken wings were awesome!

Seabird
Another great place to go for seafood is the aptly named Seabird, located in downtown Wilmington. Although set in a historic building, Seabird is bright and modern, with a fresh take on retro vibe. It may have modernized its establishment, but the food has always been a celebration of seafood and North Carolina cuisine.
Offering a seasonal menu, every dish is made from locally caught and locally grown produce. The oysters and shellfish have all been caught locally by small-scale fishermen, contributing to the local economy. The Swordfish schnitzel has won over previous guests, and the grilled oysters also get a standout mention for their quality and flavor.

Bespoke
Another coffee shop we love is Bespoke, your friendly neighborhood corner coffee shop. There’s not a lot of seating, but the coffee is always made to perfection – it’s the best latte I’ve had in Wilmington. We stop in here for coffee on every visit to Wilmington and even when we drive through on our way to Carolina Beach, or further south.
They also have a good selection of baked goods, many of which are vegan. You can also preorder your coffee online to pick up. If you need a grab-and-go breakfast, this is the ideal place to go.

Indochine
Great Thai food!
For a little bit of spice, head to Indochine for a chance to taste the best Thai and Vietnamese food in Wilmington. Not only is the food packed with flavor, but you know you’re eating something good for your body and soul. It prides itself on offering dishes with a nutritional and pharmaceutical-conscious recipe, using fresh vegetables and herbs. You could even call it holistic dining.
The menu is filled with overwhelming goodness; I can never resist a Thai curry or a pho. And it’s not just the food that’s good for the soul, the space feels like you’re dining in a beachside resort in Thailand, or in a garden in Hanoi. We love the individual wooden huts, offering an intimate dining experience.
Be sure to walk around the place and admire the Indochinese bridges, hanging lanterns, and palm frog plants. It’s definitely the most authentic Asian restaurant in Wilmington not only for its food but decor as well.
But, be warned, they do not take reservations, and dinner wait times can be 2 hours long, and this restaurant is massive!! to ensure you do not miss out on these authentic Asian experience in Wilmington, either get to go (we still waited a long time) jump the line and eat at the bar (still may have to wait) or dine at lunch (while busy we still walked straight in!) Lunch is also cheaper!!

Cloud 9 Rooftop Bar
Cloud 9 Rooftop Bar is a must-visit destination in downtown Wilmington, offering stunning Cape Fear River views, especially at sunset. With its warm, seasonal hours, this rooftop gem is perfect for enjoying handcrafted cocktails while soaking in the vibrant colors of the evening sky.
The menu features a selection of bar food favorites, from shareable snacks to light bites, making it a great spot for a casual evening out. Pair your drink with their famous sliders or a fresh flatbread for a satisfying experience. Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or just unwinding after a day of exploring Wilmington, Cloud 9 provides an unbeatable setting.
Incredible views
We have not eaten here, but have enjoyed a drink and those views during our stay at the Embassy Suites by Hilton Wilmington Riverfront, which is the home of Cloud 9 Rooftop Bar. Next visit will be to eat and enjoy the sunset.
