Best Outdoor Photography Locations in Raleigh for Special Photoshoots [Engagement, Pregnancy, Wedding Pics]

If you’re looking to capture a perfect moment, there are many outdoor photography locations in Raleigh that can be used to frame the biggest moments and make them memorable. From engagement shoots to wedding portraits to pregnancy pictures and milestone birthdays, Raleigh has a surprising range of backdrops that make your pictures truly stand out. 

Choose between backdrops of shaded oaks, historic brick facades, manicured gardens, glistening lakes, and sleek urban skylines – there’s a backdrop for every character and occasion. We’ve often found the best locations to be ones that frame a subject without overwhelming them, so we prefer natural landscapes over imposing modern architecture, and our photoshoot spots tend to be more natural settings.

Although Raleigh has a ton of special occasion photoshoot locations, if you are using a professional photographer, note that many of these spaces require permits or permission, so we highly recommend that you consult with a professional photographer about locations. You can usually get around the permits by getting a friend with a decent camera to photograph you.

Raleigh Rose Garden

Our personal favorite place for special occasion shoots is the Raleigh Rose Garden, which we have used to take family portraits before. We loved it because it has lots of bloom-filled spaces to choose from, with dozens of rose varieties blooming at various times of the year, so whatever time of year your occasion is, the garden has something blooming. It has several rose bed areas, a central pergola, and rose climbing frames that offer a naturally elegant backdrop for engagements, maternity portraits, and anniversary photography sessions. 

Professional photographers are welcome to use the park as a photoshoot location, but since they are charging clients for the photoshoot, it is considered commercial photography. Commercial photography is required to have a permit from the City of Raleigh Parks via the Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Resources Department. You can also reserve the park for a private photoshoot or even to have your special occasion (weddings, proposals, etc.).

WRAL Azalea Gardens

Another backdrop for those looking for a floral scene, the WRAL Azalea Garden offers a scenic burst of color, especially in the summer season when thousands of azaleas erupt into bloom, creating walls of pinks, purples, and whites. This would be our top choice for a background for engagement sessions, graduation photos, and family pictures. 

There are many great spots within the gardens to use as your background. The most popular spot is over the winding path with azaleas on either side, with our beloved loblolly pines creating a shaded canopy to protect the sun from washing out your photos. There are also some benches tucked into alcoves, an ornate fountain, and open lawn areas for group shots and wider compositions.

You do not need a permit to take professional photographs in the Gardens, as they are a public garden; however, be considerate of other people in the garden. You cannot close down a section for your photoshoot, so if you want to avoid other people, time your visit for opening time or just before it closes (open dawn until dusk). This is the best time for photography anyway.

NC Museum of Art Park

The North Carolina Museum of Art Park is an expansive, modern, and quietly dramatic setting for photography, and is a popular one for photographers to use because it has many versatile backdrops; its blend of open meadows, reflective water features in front of contemporary architecture, striking large-scale sculptures, and winding paths through oaks provides a backdrop for any style. 

Our favorite spot is in front of the pond, which reflects the subject and the glass-fronted NCMA building behind it in the water’s surface, which makes for interesting pieces. Whether you want to capture minimalist, romantic, or unique and bold images, you can find them all without ever leaving the park. And the sunflowers field in season make for a great backdrop.

You are allowed to use the park and grounds as a backdrop with permission from NCMA. Bridal and wedding photos inside the museum can be done in the event space, not in the galleries, which isn’t the most exciting space, so we would recommend using the park. Photographers are not allowed to use tripods, lights, tracks, or other types of equipment.

JC Raulston Arboretum

The JC Raulston Arboretum is another natural setting that offers a rich, ever-changing backdrop. It has themed gardens, so you can wander around and see which garden has a backdrop that feels right to you. For photoshoots, our favorite area is the Japanese garden, which has a tranquil water feature in front of manicured rock gardens and Acer trees. It’s interesting, but without drawing too much focus away from the subject. 

Another sought-after spot in the garden is the Lath House, where the young and tender plants are cared for in raised beds, but the slat roof creates this unique, filtered light effect. If you go early in the morning or late afternoon, it provides a nice shade that creates a soft, romantic atmosphere, but if you go in the height of day, there will be striped shadows which will wash out your photos and look weird, so try to time your visit right for this background. Or just wander around and see what inspires you. There are many corners with colorful perennials and winding paths, perfect for intimate shots. 

Professional and recreational photographers are welcome, so long as your photography sessions don’t interfere with other visitors. Dorothea Dix Park

Most people think of Dorothea Dix Park when they think of a natural setting to use as a background, and it’s for good reason. As one of the largest parks in the Southeast, it has so much diversity, from sweeping skyline views to sunflower fields to manicured gardens. It’s Raleigh’s most in-demand location for special occasion photos because of how versatile it is. 

Personally, we like the open field for family portraits and group photos because it allows for clean, uncluttered compositions, while if you’re looking for an engagement shoot, pregnancy pictures, or baby photos, the sunflower field when it’s in bloom is unique and colorful. 

Alternatively, the open meadow facing downtown Raleigh, particularly at sunset when the golden-hour light casts a soft glow over the skyline, has that quintessentially Raleigh shot – we’d consider it for family photos for holiday cards, for example. And of course, don’t forget the GIANT trolls make for fun photo opps. Professional photographers need a permit from Raleigh Parks, the same one that covers the Raleigh Rose Garden. 

Cloer Family Vineyards

A unique but beautiful setting that we discovered on a bike ride along the American Tobacco Trail is Cloer Family Vineyards, which sits just outside Apex. It brings a touch of European countryside charm to the Raleigh area and would be our top choice to use as a background for romantic, milestone-driven photoshoots. It’s especially popular for engagement sessions, anniversary portraits, and even small wedding shoots.

There are a variety of backdrops to choose from. In the right season, there are rolling vineyard rows, and outside of bloom season, there are rustic buildings like the iconic red barn that create a setting that feels both timeless and intimate. Cloer Family Vineyards is a private business, so for professional photoshoots, email [email protected] for permission.

Durant Nature Preserve

For that quintessential woodland setting, we like the scenes at Durant Nature Preserve, which has a quiet, woodland setting that’s ideal for intimate photoshoots like engagement sessions and maternity shoots. The towering pines, earthy trails, and calm water reflecting on the lake add depth to your pictures without distraction, letting the moment take center stage.

The most favored setting by photographers is the lakeside docks, where you can capture your subject in front of the still water that reflects both light and the woodland landscape for a peaceful, balanced composition. Alternatively, the shaded forest trails can often create dappled sunlight filtering through the trees, which in spring and fall, when the sun is less harsh and the changing color of the leaves, can create a timeless look. William B. Umstead State Park

Another forest setting we like is Umstead State Park, which has a more rugged, immersive natural background. We also like it because it’s so large, you can often find a space uninterrupted, and you don’t have to worry about crowds forming around you. It offers a combination of dense forests, winding trails covered in leaves, and tranquil lakes, making it especially well-suited for engagement sessions, family shoots, and maternity photos. 

Professional photographers need to obtain a photography permit from the North Carolina state parks. Note that it can take up to two weeks to process!

Lake Crabtree County Park

• Professional Photography Regulations: Yes

Just west of downtown Raleigh, Lake Crabtree County Park is a favorite photoshoot location for relaxed, light-filled special occasion photos. It’s especially popular for engagement sessions, family portraits, and graduation photos, because it offers backgrounds that blend open water views, wooded trails, and wide open spaces.

The lake itself is the most preferred backdrop because it has that soft, reflective backdrop that changes beautifully with the light. There are also plenty of shoreline overlooks, where the water stretches into a clean horizon, which makes for a serene backdrop that’s not too distracting. 

There are also wooden piers and small docks for more intimate, close-up photography, but be mindful that other people visit the park, and so you may have to share these docks with fishing enthusiasts. All professional photographers need to register for a permit, which can be done online, and is date and time-dependent. The permit is free, but it has a list of rules you must abide by, and staff may require you to show your permit if asked.

Pullen Park

A beloved backdrop for photoshoots is Pullen Park, because it has the perfect combination of tranquil garden scenes and whimsical charm. It’s especially popular for family portraits and children’s photography, because you can ride the historic carousel afterwards (I mean, when in Rome, right?). As one of Raleigh’s oldest public parks, it has a historic character and playful scenery to use as a backdrop. The most iconic spot is in front of the vintage carousel, where painted horses and the soft motion create a sense of movement and joy. 

Another popular spot is on the small pedestrian bridge arching over a quiet pond, which has soft reflections and a background of greenery. There are also tree-lined walkways and open lawns for wider, more relaxed group shots. Professional photographers need a permit from Raleigh Parks, the same one that covers Dorothea Dix Park and the Raleigh Rose Garden. 

Historic Yates Mill County Park

For something a little bit unique, the Historic Yates Mill Country Park is a backdrop steeped in history and framed by natural beauty. The combination of the preserved 18th-century mill architecture and the serene lake views creates a kind of cinematic scene. We think a photo in front of the restored gristmill is the best shot — it offers a rustic, textured backdrop for close-up portraits. Alternatively, the millpond shoreline is a good spot for soft, reflective shots, especially at sunrise and sunset when the water mirrors the surrounding trees and sky.

Historic Oak View Park

Finally, another historic setting with a natural aesthetic is the Historic Oak View Park, which is a former cotton plantation with open fields, heritage buildings, and centuries-old oak trees. The best background is in front of the park’s preserved agricultural structures, which give off a distinctly North Carolina vibe — unpolished, with lots of texture and authenticity. Most photographers choose to photograph against the historic farmhouse and outbuildings, which have artistic, weathered wood and simple lines to offer a strong, natural frame without being too distracting.
