As someone who rarely gets my nails done—being so consumed by life and not entirely comfortable with fake nails—I often avoid the process altogether. However, attending such a dignified event demands a touch of sparkle for both fingers and toes.

The perfect opportunity arose to collab rate with Sen Nail Spa and highlight their new salon in Wake Forest. So, we set aside our winter socks and gloves (it’s been cold enough) and treated ourselves to a manicure and pedicure to ensure our hands and feet were ball ready.

Sen Nail Spa isn’t just another nail salon. It’s the embodiment of hard work, dedication, and the mission of its married owners, Phuong and Tai, to “do the right thing, even if it’s hard.”

Their journey is as inspiring as it is heartfelt: from a small town in Vietnam to immigrating to Raleigh over a decade ago, learning English at Wake Tech (where they met), earning advanced degrees from ECU (including a master’s degree in business for Phuong), and now running a successful business while raising two young boys (and continuing to work their regular job while they grow this nail salon with plans for expansion.)

Choosing my nail colors

The name “Sen,” which means lotus, is a perfect metaphor for their story—a testament to how beauty can arise from the mud. Their spa reflects that ethos with its serene ambiance, attention to detail, and commitment to enhancing every customer’s experience.

Not only are they showing the beauty that can be born from doing hard things right, but they’re also proving to people like you and me that your dreams are possible if you just roll up your sleeves with resilience and determination and do just that little bit extra for the people you serve.

We thoroughly enjoyed our time at the spa, chatting with them, learning more about their story and watching how they cared for each customer that walked through the door and sat in the chair.

Signature Manicure and Glamorous Nail Enhancement

I opted for GEL-X nail enhancement, with swirling nail art that perfectly complemented my sparkly blue gown, while Craig experienced his first-ever manicure and pedicure—and he’s already planning his next visit! 

With over +1400 colors available, the staff is happy to guide you, whether you’re overwhelmed or have a specific look in mind. Just show them a photo, and they’ll make magic happen. There are all the nail options you can hope for including acrylic, dipping powder, builder gel and Gel X.

Phuong went through the nail color options and helped me choose a soft pink color with a touch of shimmer to complement my blue dress that has a sparkly bodice. She also selected a color that would match my skin tone – skills I do not have. 

Over 1,000 colors available

My nail technician, Jennie, was precise, gentle, and enthusiastic, even helping me decide on the oval nail shape and adding a dusting of sparkle to match my dress. She even went the extra mile to help style our nail photo! 

Signature Manicure

After my nails were all set, I was able to relax with the signature manicure package. While the scented candle was burning, Jennie gave me an indulgent hand scrub, hand mask, and massage. If only all workdays went like this! 

The signature manicure includes:

• Nail trimming and shaping
• cuticle care
• sea salt soak
• sugar scrub, lotion, and hot towels – Honey milk Cuccio product.
• Choose Paraffin Wax or Collagen Gloves – Honey milk.

Pedicure Perfection (Blue Lagoon Special Package)

The pedicure was equally indulgent, and definitely the best I’ve ever had. Since Phuong helped me choose my color, I just had to sit on the luxurious massage chair (think Lexus leather) and relax with a warm chamomile neck wrap hugging me.

Milk and honey took center stage in the pampering treatments, used to soak and nourish the skin. Paired with a sea salt scrub and a massage cream applied with hot stones, this luxurious combination left my skin feeling soft, refreshed, and deeply relaxed.

Phuong’s attention to detail stood out with each of the pedicure ingredients beautifully laid out on a tray with flowers and a scented oil massage candle – used, not just for its relaxing aroma, but for massage oil  on my legs.  

Oh and that luxurious massage chair! It stayed on for the entire hour, rolling and kneading away my tension.. Yep. Craig has decided he’s definitely into this pedicure business. 

And to elevate the experience, choose a treat (or two) from the complimentary snack bar filled with chips, nuts, and chocolate, coffee, tea, water and soda. Certain packages may come with a complimentary wine, cocktail or mocktail. I had a yummy Blue Lagoon cocktail with coconut rum! 

Eyebrow Waxing

From eyebrows to Brazilian, Sen has all your waxing needs covered. I also treated myself to eyebrow wax, which was quick, painless, and left me feeling polished and ready for the evening.

Phuong is proud of the quality products she carefully chose for the salon including the CND shellac premium choice for long lasting color and formula that helps protect your natural nails. It cures quickly and is smooth and shiny and comes in opaque, metallic glitter and sheer finish. Other brands include OPI, Nitro and Voesh vegan skin care.

Packages are designed to suit different budgets and preferences starting from basic at $28 up to the indulgent signature at $48+ to signature for manicures and starting at $39 or basic pedicures up to for signature pedicures $99.

Kids manicure and pedicures are also available!

Signature Scents

What does a lotus smell like? As Phuong and Tai soon discovered, creating the signature scent of a lotus for their candles and diffusers was no easy task. The lotus flower itself almost doesn’t have a scent! 

But in keeping with their mantra of doing hard things right, they weren’t deterred. Instead, they focused on capturing the feeling the lotus inspires—rising from the mud to create beauty—and created a scent that evokes that journey.

I have the Sen lotus candle burning beside me as I type, and I truly feel like I’m rising up, perfectly aligned with my word for the year: ELEVATE. You can purchase these signature products at the salon at $39 for candles or a diffuser.

Phuong shared with us how her OCD nature often prevents her from using public restrooms, so Tai inspired and created the ultimate comfort bathroom in the salon so customers would feel safe and comfortable. 

• Relaxing Amenities: Complimentary drinks (water, coffee, tea, wine, or cocktails), cozy chamomile wraps, and even scented candles—not just for ambiance, but for soothing wax rubs—create an atmosphere of ultimate relaxation.

As someone who doesn’t get nail enhancements often (I always felt they hindered my day-to-day activities), I was pleasantly surprised by how functional and beautiful my nails were after this visit.

In fact, I’m typing this with ease and precision, realizing I’ve been missing out on a bit of pampering in my life.

Craig and I both agreed that Sen Nail Spa is worth the drive to Wake Forest, and it’s perfect for a fun date or solo self-care session. What about the Governor’s Ball?

I know you really want to see how my nails looked at the ball. The day after I had my nails done, we received the news that the ball had been postponed until April 5 due to the incoming winter storm!

But as my daughter Savannah said, “Don’t worry Mom, it just means you get to do your nails again in two months’ time.”

• Go with your girlfriends – bonding never felt so good over a glass of wine and girl talk. And I fully support the further development of the bromance for the men!
